Which call to buy?
« on: August 03, 2014, 07:25:15 PM »
We've had lots of topics about calling. But I can't seem to remember talking about specific calls, only types of calls.

If i were to make the trip to cabelas tomorrow.  What would be the best call to buy?

Most are going to sound the same, or can sound the same with the right technique. I would suggest a closed reed and I would buy Burnham Brothers. Either the C3 Long Range, MB1 Mini Blaster or the BM1 Black Magic. In that order.

I would rather buy from Bearmanrick, Jason Phelps or Rainshadow.

Bear hunting forum. Methinks bears.

I agree. Order from Rick or Phelps or Rainshadow and in a couple days you'll have your custom handmade call from local guys who know what they're doing.

I would rather buy from Bearmanrick, Jason Phelps or Rainshadow, just don't go to Cabala's and get one off the shelf. These three will show you how to use them properly for better success.  :twocents:

Buy one from Rick. I have four of his calls and many of Jason Phelps', as well. Both are extremely talented makers and the sounds they produce are excellent. Sit with a buddy at your back or a big rock wall. They will come in on you!

I will be using one of Rick's great calls, a small howler that does great distress, this week out by Tiger Lake, got huffed at two weeks out there, thinks I got a fine spot picked out for some calling and glassing.

I have a couple different calls and have yet to call anything in except a coyote last weekend.  He hung around for a long while too.  My question is should I continue using my manual call or invest in a electronic call?  I went with a guy last year that was using an electronic call and he had the dang thing so loud it was echoing in the valleys which I thought would be too loud.  We didn't see any bear that day either.  Opinions?

Before I bought some calls from Rainshadow and Bearmanric, which I have several from each guy, I used a Jones javelina pig call and called in several bear.  It was a loud coarse call, which I prefer for bear to the higher pitched cottontail type call.  Steve's and Rick's calls are not only the best sounding calls on the market, but they are works of art as well.

You can never call too loud for bear.... unless they are within a hundred yards.

On Thursday I had a chance at a bear but things did not go well  :bash: Once the bear went into the brush I ran down to within 50 yrds where he was in the road and the wind was in my face and he never knew I was there . So I decided to give the call a try .. I blew that thing as hard as I could and for about 20 minutes but he never pop his head out again  :dunno: All I had was my distress rabbit call ..1st time I ever tried calling a bear and I thought for as close as I was and I knew he was there that he would at least come back out to see what all the screaming was about ..So I guess I need a distress deer call  :dunno: ? I also wish someone would show me the bears they have killed using a call instead of just telling me about it  :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle:
