150 grain .308 for bear?
« on: August 07, 2014, 02:14:22 PM »
I've found that Federal Power Shok ammunition patterns really well in my .308

Especially the 150 grains.  180 works well too

Are 150 grains heavy enough for black bear, or should I stick to the 180 for shoulder-breaking power?

I'd say plenty. My bears have fell to 130 & 150 gr 270's. You do your job, the bullet will do its job.

I use to use a .308 lever action 150gr  for years. Tough to beat 180, but good shot placement ( like h2o said) is better.

I personally know about 60-65 bear that didn't like the 150 grain from a 308 one bit! :chuckle:  Heard a few of those moan about it for a few seconds, but most took their emphatic disapproval to their grave silently! ;)

Core-Lokt is a tougher bullet with a bit better penetration and reliable weight retention. It is my preference in 308 factory ammo.  But I expect few bear will really notice the difference.

.270  150 grain just fine. It's a very flat shooting round with plenty of power. I have shot a bear w a .270 using 130 grains, and dropped it like a sack of potatoes! Jack Oconner would tell you a 270 will kill any big game animal. Shoot with confidence and you will be just fine! Hope you get a hog.

My Ruger M-77 loves 168 grain hand loads. Super tight groups.
The .308 is a game changer on most of North Americas game.
My Uncle has been carrying his ever since I can remember and have dropped everything from Moose down with nothing more than neck shots.
He says it doesn't waste any meat that way. They go where you put them. Fersure.
