I was wondering what would happen if you drilled out the nipple, to give it a larger hole for the musket cap to fire through....Good or Bad idea?
I was thinking more flame from the cap, less chance of miss fire should the powder become a little moist. Never really considered the blow back, that is a good point. What is the difference in the nipples that are for sale, there are standard OEM ones and there are hot fire or something like that, where the hole is about half the way up the nipple?
I have a CVA elkhorn and about three different musket cap nipples. I don't remember which one is "stock", but there is one with a noticeably larger hole in the center. I have fewer missfires with this nipple and there has been no adverse problems while using it. All were bought from the store (none used) and I didn't drill any of them myself. I always put the one with the larger pin hole in to start the hunt and the others are my backup.
Save your face guy, This is how Remington made the news with their trigger problem. Dont try and sporterize what the engineers have tested in a chamber.
There are in fact other nipples on the market with larger flash holes. Hot shot nipples, red hot nipples, etc. There are even a couple with extra side holes. They do not create any problems with blow back. I took one of my musket nipples and enlarged it to 1/16+ of an inch. Much better fire, and no blow back. Where you will get a problem is in inclement weather. The larger hole tends to wisk in more water during sleet and rain storms. So be prepared for miss fires do to moisture. Just my two bits!
