Are they leaving any fish?
« on: August 16, 2014, 07:40:09 AM »
This should make your day,

With the record run predicted they have already given too many of the fish away.

This years Bonneville dam count is only about half of what last years was at this time. The commercial and Indians won't be leaving much for upriver!

The commercial Gill net season will be Aug. 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22

The commercial Seine nets will be Aug. 19, 21, 26, 28 Sept. 2,3,4, - 8,9,10,11 - 15,17 - 22,24,29

Then there is the Indians-

Aug. 18-22, 4.5 days

Aug. 25-30, 5.5 days

Sept. 2-6, 4.5 days

Sept. 8-13, 5.5 days

Sept. 15-19, 4.5 days

That's 24.5 days out of 32, they won't be letting many past.

From what very little I know this seems to be something that is very different between WA and AK.  AK waits until the fish are there and then splits them up.  WA allows full bore and hopes the fish will show up.  The years where the actual return differs a bunch can get pretty ugly.

Look at Baker Lake, the return is about 38% of predicted.  Most Puget Sound chinook fisheries were WELL below expectations yet no adjustments to the harvest were made (commercial or sport).

Once the ink dries on the WA/OR number, it turns to gospel.
