777 ffg or fffg
« on: August 21, 2014, 08:52:50 PM »
What do you recommend for a 50 caliber rifle-777 ffg or fffg? I shoot 250 and 300gr Hornady SST-ML. What is the difference between the powders? The Hodgdon site doesn't explain it well. Thanks.

Most muzzle loaders are made for ff. FFF is faster burning powder. I shoot 120 grains of triple seven ff with 245 grain bullet with good luck.

FFFg and FFg are the same.  The FFFg is a finer granulation, and because we measure by volume instead of weight you get more powder with the finer FFFg.  As a result you also get more bang.

I have always gone by this:
Fg is for cannons, FFg is for .50 and above, FFFg is for revolvers, and FFFFg is for the pan on a flintlock.
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

I was a FF user.  Reading some of Sabotloaders posts, I tried FFF.  My 50 cal Bighorn fires 150 FPS faster with the FFF.  SL says it ignites easier in cold weather also.

I use FFF in my 50 caliber.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Just my preference when it comes to T7 2f or 3f, but when using caps I use T7-3f and when using Primers I use T7-2f.  T7 takes more heat to ignite than does real BP or any of the subs other than BH.  Because of this I go with the 3f powder smaller granules and it ignites easier.  I prefer #11 Mag caps or Dynamit Noble 1075+ caps fitting in a very tight nipple to get all of the heated gas directed right at the powder.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
