Does anyone have a report on blueberries at about 5000ft?

We saw scattered amounts at 6k...seem LATE this year. Should make the high hunt fun!

I was up above green water at 5000 feet and the berries on those bushes were ripe. Lots of people came up later in the afternoon to pick them.

I was up yesterday at that elevation here in the NW corner and they were still developing. Small and green. They should be on in 2-3 weeks. Silk is right. Berries should be on during the high hunt. Can't figure anyone shooting a bear during that hunt. It'd be like going salmon fishing and ending the trip for a bullhead.  :dunno:

West slope of the cascades last week. 5k' and up, lots of ripe blueberries. Seemed more on south facing slowest but still plenty around. Bears were into them full throttle.

So I have to ask, I always thought those high berries were huckleberries?  My daughter ask me yesterday why the high berries were blue and the ones by our house were red, I didn't know why. So I read this thread and its starting to make sense!  I have always thought they were huckleberries up high!  By the way, went up sat by crystal and they were everywhere, I could have filled a 5 gal bucket.

Yes, most of them are huckleberries and they are mostly blue in color. There are actual blueberries up high too. There are two kinds of blueberries up high that I know of. One is a high bush and the other is a low bush. The only areas I've seen the low bush type are on the side of Mt. Rainier and up in Alaska. I'm sure they're on many other high mountains between here and there. The high bush blueberries are scattered but there is a high concentration of them above Buck Creek on the south side of Rainier park. The blueberries are distinct in that - they have a white coating on them. Huckleberries do not have that coating on them. The high bush blueberries also aren't near as sweet as huckleberries. The low bush blueberries have a sweeter flavor than their high bush cousins. They're awesome in pancakes!

Thanks for explaining!  I didn't think those were actual blue berries, we have the red ones at my house (700') but the blue ones taste much better IMHO.

99% of those "blue" berries you find in the cascades are huckleberries.  A lot of people just refer to them as blueberries because of the color.  True blueberries have larger seeds.  On the outside they can look very similar.
