How do i get my dog to stop hard mouthing?!
« on: September 02, 2014, 09:45:50 PM »
My 8 year old,  fat, weimeraner lab mix started mouthing really bad. Tore up the breasts of 3 of the doves we shot today, never did that before. Want to know a way to stop him from doing that without kneeing him in the belly.

He also if given the chance will steal the bird right out of your hand.

He wasn't trained well, but he does okay for flushing pheasants.

I had that same problem an old timer told me to screw two brushes back to back leaving the screws just shy of the ends of the brush tie a wing to both side and when he bites down to hard he will feel the sharp pain it worked some might think it's bad but it's tough love pinching an ear or kicking the dog might cause more damage.

I use an egg, I hard boil the egg take it out let it cool to where I can hold it in my hand so it is not burning but still warm roll it across the floor and tell the dog to fetch it.  they pick it up drop it and then pick it up very gentle.  I have used this methood on all of my dogs.

Force fetch training.

 :yeah:

But find a pro to help you if you go that route. Not something you can do half way or want to screw up.

Frozen birds are a tried and true trick as well.

Well heres a bit of a problem. He doesn't retrieve really.
He mostly helps find lost birds and chase down wounded birds.

I wouldn't do that. Never put sharp object's in your dog's mouth. Good side effect of that other than hurting the dog is it just might give up retrieving altogether.
There's a reason I like dog's more than people

at 8 I'd take him hunting and have fun. If he eats two doves and flushes a few birds each year who cars? Not many years left to enjoy him. start your next pup right with early training.

Blackjaw its a training issue. I agree with Happy...enjoy the dog and have fun at his age.

Train the next one right and life is good.
