West side ninja elk
« on: September 15, 2014, 11:28:09 AM »
:chuckle:  Elk in the area I hunt are pretty tight lipped.  They rarely respond to locator bugles but they do come in silent pretty often.  I hear a lot of guys pull up, let out a bugle or two, if nothing responds they drive off thinking there are no elk in the area.

The last couple years I have been hunting them just like I hunt predators.  Set up a stand covering where I think they might come from and start calling.  Switch between cow talk and various bugles for 30-40 minutes.  If nothing comes in I move about a mile and do it again.  I know they are in there...somewhere.  :chuckle:

I have had great success with seeing bulls and this year I finally got an arrow in one.  I called in 5 confirmed bulls this year doing this.  One was the biggest Roosevelt I have ever seen (Calling for my dad but he could not get a shot).  He never made a sound until he was right on top of us.  Of course there were dozens of stand where nothing responded but all of my hunting was done within 3 or 4 miles from my camp.

Thought I would share my strategy and video.  Hope it helps.

Condradulations on your elk and I think your strategy is the right idea.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

cool video Kain, I also liked the sparrow trap.

Thanks, great video.  I would be worried about that shot choice but it looks like you managed to slip it just behind the shoulder to get into the lungs.  Lethal shot for sure but I wonder whether the placement explains the lack of blood on the ground.  Congrats on the harvest. :)

Yes no doubt the high placement and no exit wound left little blood on the ground.  He bled out inside and the broadhead was in the liver so with every step he took while running it was just blending his insides.  I did find the blood trail on the pack out though.  I was just feet from it.  I just happened to see the elk before I found it since he didnt go far and it was pretty open.  I felt pretty confident when I took the shot but it did end up closer to the shoulder than I thought.
