Effect of the weather
« on: December 10, 2008, 08:48:37 PM »
Heading out this weekend and sounds like we will have some snow and cold also. I was wondering if anyone has any idea how the weather affects the elk in western wa. I am going to be out sat and sun in the winston unit so I will not be in the high mts. Do the elk move more or less in the snow and cold?

not sure about winston-  but it takes FEET of snow in the south central units I hunt to make much of a difference... sure is fun to cut tracks though!

Shouldn't have much effect at all with the amounts we get on this side of the Mtn.  Other than having some good tracking snow.

I was out this afternoon and found a lot of fresh sign form this morning, looking forward to getting a little snow to be able to track since I couldn't find em this afternoon. Love hunting in the snow.  Today was all in about 7-10 year old reprod, thicker than snot but a lot of elk using the area. should be good if the snow comes. Good luck to those still out this weekend.

Friday morning is the time to get out...  The deer feel the change in weather coming.  They will be feeding and moving more then usual.  Once the snow hits some will hole up...

Nothing is better on the West side than pouring down Rain and Wind for Elk Hunting, It keeps them up and moving and lets you get right up on them. Deer are a diffrent story, the day before a big storm and the day it breaks seem to be when they are up and feeding. When I used to be allowed to Trap in this State I could stay in tune with the woods and animal movements, now the best way is to pay attention to what you see driving down the Highway at Night in what weather conditions (Racoon's Possums House Cats and of course Deer and Elk), It wont take long for you to see when you need to call in sick to work, or wait for a few days.
