Any success yet???!!
« on: September 17, 2014, 10:55:30 AM »
Haha. I know it's only 2 days in...I'm just chomping at the bit: taking off on Thursday for 4 days in the ALW. Looks like a bit of rain, then clear and warm on the weekend.
Should make finding fresh-er tracks a breeze!

I'm also playing tour guide for two new deer hunters this year....wish me luck....

As a side note: does anyone buy in to the hunting north vs south / east vs west facing slopes? I've heard mixed reviews and I've never really paid attention to it in the past, but thought about tweaking my plans accordingly this year....
For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!

Absolutely. If you don't, you're missing out.

Archery maybe! Rifle no....  During rifle animals dont care what the slope faces, long as they feel safe..

If the north facing slopes have shade, sure I would try there first..
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

We went in two days early. Glassed for two days. Not much for big bucks in my spot this year. I ended up shooting a small buck an hour into the hunt opening morning. Short and sweet. Onto elk!!

Lots of deer when I scouted my area. Nothing when I went back.
Lots of work.
Lots of fun. I wouldn't trade those few days for anything...except those days and one of those big deer I saw.

Well,
I had a short high hunt this year:
My hunting partner scored last minute tickets to the hawks game on Sunday!! Good news and bad news...
We ended up hunting two full days and capped it off with a trip to century link!

Learned a couple of lessons this year:
1) keep looking: we didn't see ANY tracks, droppings etc in three bowls that we were hunting. We tried everything. Finally, on a whim,we decided to take a hike down from our 6500 ft elevation to 5500 ft. We jumped a big bodied shooter (looked to be a 4pt). Searched for him all day and never caught up to him. Saw a ton of tracks just 500-1000 ft lower from where we were hunting.
2) more time needed: while I've spent some time in this area hiking and hunting, 2 day high hunts just won't cut it for me anymore...with densities being pretty low in my unit, I need to give myself at least 4 days to find, pattern and stalk deer up there.

Looking forward to the general season and may take a crack at hunting my high hunt unit for general season...
For Pete's sake...pick up your feet, man!
