NE OR bull
«
on:
September 25, 2014, 05:19:50 PM »
I know its not WA but my dad and I drew a bull tag for a NE OR unit and I was able to get my biggest bull to date. I had scouted the unit only via Google earth and spent my first day learning the unit. After locating a bull our first day, we decided to hunt him the next morning. The next morning we pulled up to the gate where we wanted to walk in and approach the bull from and found 2camps had come in the night before and there were 6 rigs at the gate. Needless to say I was disappointed. We decided to try our luck anyway and after a short hike to the area the bull was the day before we sat and listened for any calls. About 20 min passed and we didn't hear a peep so I diceded to let out a few estru calls and a challenge bugle. No more than I stopped my call our bull sounded off across the draw. We quickly made a game plan and set off after the bull. As we made our way down the hill 2 separate hunters came in and started calling to us and our bull slipped away to a distant basin. So now we needed to figure out a plan B. Plan B ended up being to back out and drag the 2 hunters away from the real bull with a sweet sounding bugle, then circle back around to cut off the real bull. After an hour of backtracking and playing defense, we made our way back to the bull. Now that I had the bull one on one, we were able get in on the herd and between the bull and his cows. A few light bugles and the bull came into 45 yards screaming his displeasure that another bull was into his herd. As he screamed his challenge one last time able to slip an arrow through his heart and watched his expire within seconds. I can't believe how lucky I am to get such a great bull from an area I had only been to for a few hours.

Congrats on a great bull. I have 18 Oregon elk points and have been debating units, maybe next year.

Halo with 18pts I'd hunt Mt Emily...I think the opportunity for a true monster is there. You'll see more bulls in Wenaha though. But I'll partner up with you and we can go hunt where I got this guy

Awesome bull. I don't think the "sleeper unit" is going to be a sleeper unit after all the 380" bulls being posted on the 'net this year...
I can't believe the hunt I had in there. Apparently you do just show up and bango a 325-380" bull within a day or so. Me bitter?
