Boomwhop's 2014 Muzzy Hunt
« on: October 01, 2014, 10:43:02 PM »
It was way too short of season.  Bitter sweet.  Perfect weather, some hunter 1st's and some great stories for the camp fire.  Does it count if you miss the deer but the flame from your muzzle hit him???  It was a weird season.  I will do as Bone did and just post the photo's.  I had a huge dilemma to start with and would love some input from our members.  WHO tags it....  Buck A is shot at and hit poorly... by hunter A...  Buck A runs off and Hunter B helps look for the Buck.  Hunter B finds Buck who is not moving but still standing but can not contact Hunter A.  Hunter B--shoot it before it hobbles away or into property you can not hunt?  If hunter B puts it down who tags it???
I will fill in the details after some discussion.

I would say that's entirely up to the two hunters. Legally it would likely be the second hunter who would tag it, since he fired the fatal shot. But if I was hunter B, I wouldn't want a deer that had already been shot by somebody else. So if it were me, I would let the first guy tag the deer.

Gamies go with the person that killed it or dropped it on the ground dead.  This is a normal every year Yakima battle.

I like the gun.  Go cougs.

congrats on the bucks!!!          id say if hunter B doesn't care if hunter A tags it since hunter A was original hunter to shoot and hit buck A and probably mortally wounded it and hunter A is ok that hunter B finished said buck A that hunter A should tag!!!     :dunno:

I have been "hunter B" before...  Deer jumps up wounded hobbling off and I finished it.  Hunter A shows up and says "well it's your buck now".  I said BS I just finished "YOUR" buck off so we didn't have to track it all over the damn mountain.  It turned into a back and forth argument, and needless to say I will never help anyone by finishing off there buck again.  What a *censored*ty way to end a hunting season for "hunter B".

I think it depends on if a and b know each other or are hunting together. If i finished a animal that the original shooter wanted i would let them have it. If they didnt i would tag it. If it was a buddy of mine they would tag it since they shot it first.

Why would you ruin a muzzleloader like that?

Nice pics though.  Hopefully things worked out between A and B.

Hunter A should tag it IMO.  Hunter B ensured a wounded deer wasn't running around the woods. Just seemed the right thing to do. If you guys are hunting buddies have conversation about it.

I would say the degree of desire to tag the buck by hunter B would be directly related to the size of the rack. I will bet that if it was a 30 incher, hunter B's tag would be on it before it hit the ground. Especially if he knew hunter A.  :chuckle:

I would say A tags it. I have put a second arrow in a deer for the Bro in law last year. Did nothing but speed up the process from the damage done by his arrow.  Among friends this is an easy one. I believe I'd still do the same thing for a stranger. To me is is the right thing to do. Just a harder decision when not among friends.

Now, not among friends and the first shot wasn't fatal....nay be a different dilemma.

Update... I was hunter B my Dad was hunter A. What really sucked was I had to burn a Tucannon Muzzy deer tag. (10 minutes into the season)  I felt I had to tag it since I tipped it over, and I was in full view of other hunters.  I absolutely did not want to tag it.  My Dad was hell and gone from us up the canyon.... But a dead deer 50 yards from the road, in full view and no tag, yikes, not a conversation I would want to have with LEO.
Well today the gods took pity on me and I drew the Tucannon deer tag again. I can't wait.

The Coug gun deer was the deer in question.  Luckily my dad connected on his buck that evening.

Congrats on the draw. Sounds like an unfortunate situation there. I think by law you did the right thing and karma paid off.
