kimbers mt. ascent
« on: September 16, 2014, 02:22:01 AM »
So I'm thinking about getting a kimber mt. Ascent in either 7-08 or 280ai. What round should I get and why. I know the 280 will be better for heavy bullets.I hunt deer bear and elk.

Have they released a 7-08 Mountain Ascent yet?  I thought is was still just the 308 in short action :dunno:

I'm always on the fence with the 7-08.  So normally it would be an easy decision for me to go .280.  But at 5#5oz I expect the Mtn. Ascent to be less than fun to shoot.  Guess I would make that decision based on how I felt about slappy, snappy and unhappy recoil ;)

I think you can do better for the money. Look at the Forbes rifles for starters. Same guy who designed the NULA rifles. And a few hundred bucks cheaper than the Kimber.

Been thinking about getting one in 308.  I love my kimber montana in 325wsm.  I like the 308 simply because of the options.

Ya Radsav they make them in 7-08 now. I forgot to mention that I already have two kimbers, a 84l select grade in 270 win and a Montana in 30-06. I really don't think that the 280 would kick that bad, I shoot 180 accubonds out of my '06 and it's not bad jackalope I looked at the Forbes rifles awhile ago and there price and quality is awesome I'm just a crf and wing safety guy.

Then that would be easy for me...280ia

Now if they made a 284 model that would be a completely different story :chuckle:

My Encore in .280 Rem has a pretty significant recoil. Kind of surprised me for sure. That .280 is a long action and will add weight to it, albeit minimal. I'd go with the 7mm-08. I can appreciate the CRF idea.

I think a 284 win would be perfect for that rifle. To bad I'm not made of money so I could just get both, I'm not gonna order one until mid November after the late hunt so I have awhile to choose.

Unless you are going to be hiking in thirty miles in rugged terrain where every single ounce counts, I really think you shouldn't go lighter than a standard Kimber Montana.  The ascent will much more difficult to shoot well offhand, and much less fun to shoot even in a mundane round like 308/7-08.

Just my  :twocents:

Just got off the phone with Kimber and they told me they are not making the Mountain Ascent in 7mm-08.  Maybe you are confused with the Adirondack.

Bradslam iam not confusing the mt. Ascent with the Adirondack. When you go to caliber selection they both say they come in 308 or 7-08 on kimbers website. After Friday morning I got to handle and shoot a mt. Ascent that a moose hunter in colville let me try after me and my dad helped him get his moose off the hill and in his truck. I did not care for the way u could feel the spiral fluting on the bolt when u cycled the bolt or for the way the muzzle cap looked. I will be getting a 280 ai Montana then have the stock dipped in kuiu Verde.
