Conservation officers at the Idaho Department of Fish and Game are investigating two bighorn sheep rams that were allegedly shot by the same hunter in Unit 11 south of Lewiston.

Mark Hill, the department's senior conservation officer at Lewiston, said the hunter had a tag for a ram and the initial information indicates the hunter did not intend to shoot more than one animal.

I think what H2O posted is just an intro.  You need to have a subscription to read the whole article.  I would like to know more before commenting so if someone has more info that would be great.

"Every single bit of evidence suggests it was an accidental shooting and it was self-reported to us," he said.
Hill said hunters sometimes shoot at an animal, and when it doesn't drop, they take a second shot only to discover the first shot was on target and the second shot was directed at a second animal. Hunting ethics require people to investigate after pulling the trigger to determine whether their shot was successful. Although it is a violation of hunting regulations and protocol, Hill said it's not uncommon for warnings rather than citations to be issued when hunters report themselves under such circumstances.
"I deal with similar circumstances fairly regularly," he said. "It just (normally) involves species that aren't quite so high profile."
Bighorn sheep tags for Unit 11, which regularly produce record-book quality rams, are highly sought after and sometimes fetch six-figures when auctioned.
The incident remains under investigation and no decisions have been made on charges. Hill declined to release the hunter's name or to say if he was being guided by an outfitter.
In 1999, a Washington hunter mistakenly shot two bighorn rams under similar circumstances. He picked out a ram in a group of bighorns and shot. All the rams ran over a hill and he followed. When the rams came back into view, he thought the ram he initially shot at was still standing and shot again. The ram dropped and when he approached, he found he had shot two rams. He was charged by Washington wildlife officials with exceeding his bag limit.

Trophy animal and he will probably get a slap on the wrist.   :bash:

Farmer in Pullman shoots a wolf and will be put through the ringer.   :bash: :bash: :bash:

Our system is messed up.  If what is said is true (I don't know the whole story) he should be charged with multiple violations.  The farmer shoots a wolf to protect his family, livelihood, and livestock / animals and he and well.....you know.   :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:  That is dumb.

Wonder if the hunter that shot the rams was a high profile auction winner that is being given leniency???

Not sure what to say........

off the cuff remark.  Give him the ram and fine him what the last gov tag brought in.  Put all money back into the sheep.

I once glassed three rams that were less than 150 yards away.  Took me nearly an hour to decide if one was different than the other two.  After I shot they bumped into one another getting to heck and gone.  Luckily my shot was true and the ram I chose went down within view.  When the other two came out into the open again there was blood on each ram.  No chance of hitting either of them as I made sure each was clear before I took the shot.  But I could definitely see how someone who thought they had wounded one would have taken another shot.

Sounds like the hunter did the right thing and turned himself in.  He should receive some benefit of the doubt when it comes down to sentencing, I think.  Could definitely have been avoided.  But crap happens.  Doesn't mean you are a bad person.  Just did something stupid in the heat of the moment.

Punishment?  Absolutely!  Thrown into the fire?  I want more details before I agree with that!
