how long should i wait?

So i have access to a private farm that at the moment they have alot of corn up, but they are knocking it down on the 31st so how long should i wait to hunt it.... how long would it take for the Geese and ducks to find it and want to eat on it?

i would say scout it every day if possible after the harvest or keep in touch with the farmer and have him let you know when he starts seeing geese in the field. eastside or west?

Agreed. Just check it out and watch when they show up. Probably won't take too long and depending on the size of the field, they can come quick and leave quickly so be ready.

i have had the same thing happen where i had a private field to hunt, corn stubble and the farmer called me on wed night and said there were thousands of birds hitting the field during the day . went out 3 days later and had one flock fly by and just look . didnt take a shot all weekend. beware they can change fields and move quickly. there was plenty of loose corn left in the field too so there was ample food left just decided to move on.

yeah it's on the west side and it is a huge as well as pumpkin fields being pulled so it's a mix of corn fields and pumpkin... should i hunt it the day after it's mowed down or wait?

Unless your seeing geese hitting the field, your wasting your time. As everyone else has said, scout the field once you see the birds starting to hit the field then go get em. Not only does waiting to hunt them tell you see them increase your odds for a good shoot, it also gives the birds an opportunity to figure out the field and bring all their buddies in with them. Then after you have shot them up a little bit, they may come back in a few days or even a week to that same field. Then re-peat the pattern let them sit on it for a day or two then go get them. Good management of your field could help ensure you multiple good hunts on that same field this season.

Have you seen how many are on other fields? Or what else is in the area? Also do you know how this field has yielded in years past for geese? You could get a good hunt with a 100 geese if they call come in small flocks of 10 or 15 and not all come at one time. If they all come at once, I would say you need to wait for a couple hundred more geese, if this field is known to have more on it in years past. Ducks and geese are birds of habit, they usually hit the same fields around the same time each year. Knowing the history of the field can be helpful.

Don't hunt it until Nov 1 - which is when Canada geese opens back up

I've found that field hunting can be tough.  If the birds are in the field it's great, but it's definitely not the type of spot that I would just hunt on a whim and hope that a few birds show up, which I do a lot of when hunting small water for ducks.  Oh, and if you need someone to hunt it with you let me know   I have 2 dozen full bodies and a 1 dozen shells.  After all, it really sucks to set up a big goose spread and shoot a limit out of the first flock.

Seriously, if the birds are using the field and you have permission, hunt them sooner rather than later.  The birds could move on at any time.  If the corn is an issue, be there setup by shooting hours on Nov 1.

no corn isn;'t the issue i mean just with it all up they are in front and behind the corn there are literally hundreds more this morning!!! it's like they know its coming

I would get out and hunt it before they eat it out.     If you get in and shoot a quick limit, you can let them rest and get some great hunts out of it. If they get to pressured, let it rest for a few days.  If to many birds sit, you chance others getting permission to hunt it and blocking you.

No the land owner told me i am the only one she will give permission to to hunt the entire season.  So i have an entire farm to myself.

Well funny story..... We had a flock of over 100 fly in to our spread about 40 yards out they looked as they were still committing and then flared out still dunno why.  and i think my buddy and i were so shocked to see so many coming in we didn;t shoot or maybe we were waiting for them to come closer still unsure... but we did get one before we wrapped it up at noon.  So next time won;t make that mistake.... 27 goose decoys are good but i really would prefer more so i am trying to score some.
