First Elk!
« on: October 30, 2014, 10:35:32 AM »
This is my second year Elk hunting. Hunting in GMU166 opening weekend was frustrating to say the least. Wind, rain, and snow and no animals not even a deer or chipmunk. Weather finally cleared up on Monday and I announced at Elk camp "Today is the day!". left Elk camp and walked in about a mile when there sits at 600 yards a lone spike Elk now cows no other bulls just one spike. I got down the hill as fast as I could. I got to 360 yards and that was as close as I was going to get. BOOM! lung and heart shot. So pumped to have my first Elk.
"One does not hunt in order to kill; on the contrary, one kills in order to have hunted..If one were to present the sportsman with the death of the animal as a gift he would refuse it. What he is after is having to win it, to conquer the surly brute through his own effort and skill with all the extras that this carries with it: the immersion in the countryside, the healthfulness of the exercise, the distraction from his job." Congrats!!  You may shoot some bigger and some may be smaller, BUT, one thing is for sure, you'll always remember, THAT, one.  Congrats again.

For what it's worth, that hat sure would look a lot better if it had some pinstripes..... ;)

Pack out fairly easy. 1.5 miles to another camp at the gate and they gave us a ride to our pick up.  I took both front quarters in my pack hunting partners took my stuff and the back strap and tenderloins. Then made one more trip, boned out the rear quarters. I took one and my hunting partners split the other. Steep ground but for some reason I love the pack out. I have packed deer and for some reason I love packing with weight.

Thanks for all the comments. I still can believe it.
