First Elk for 13 year old

Here is a picture of my buddies son's first elk. After hunting the entire week and not seeing any elk we were going into the last weekend a little discouraged. Friday we were able to jump a couple elk in dark timber but never did get an eye ball on them. This helped rejuvenate our spirits heading into Saturday morning as we hit the mountain one last time for the season. At about 8:00am I spotted a group of elk walking over the ridge 650 yards away. When I threw the binos up I noticed there was a young bull in the group which got us really excited. My buddy, his son, and I closed the gap to 225 yards. It was the clear that the bull was a 2x3 and was not legal for the taking, but my buddies son had a cow tag and there were plenty of cows to choose from. We set my friends son up for the shot and waited for the biggest cow to stand broad side. It was a one shot drop with the 300 weatherby, and the party was over. He was very excited, but incredibly patient and controlled. It was an excellent hunt and he was able to experience many important lessons that are vital to a new hunters success. His father was very proud to say the least!

I don't know which is more impressive. Being 13 and getting his first elk, or the fact that he did it with a 300 Weatherby at that age. Either way, that is awesome. I only wish I would have started hunting them at that age instead of 44. Hats off to all involved.

Nice
Had an uncle that hunted with a .300 Weatherby, only scoped him when he shot elk, never on the range. If he walked into camp with blood running down his face you knew, elk down.

Thanks for the replies!
The week was very trying as we hiked A LOT. We tried every "honey" hole we knew with no results. We kept praying for weather (and no fog) and we were blessed with animals moving into the area on Friday night. The hike out was all down hill which was a nice change, and it was only 2 miles to the bottom.
The rifle is a mk v ultralight, and it was brutal to shoot before the brake. Once the brake was installed it is a real "putty cat" to shoot. His old man works a lot with him when it comes to shooting so he was unusually confident for his age. He helped pack the meat and equipment out, and I know he will be present when we make sausage this year.
I think it was everything his father could have hoped for, and I loved being a part of it!

Congrats to the kid and thanks to you and his father for helping to bring a new and ethical hunter into the ranks!
