Turkey Shot?

Hello!

This Saturday I have a planned turkey hunt. I was wondering if I should just go with the turkey loads, or if i could use a game load with a high pellet count, or just a good ol' game load? i don't see the difference if you're popping them in the head anyways, but thought i should check with some more expirienced hunters. Thanks!

If it matters, this is my first turkey hunt, and i just bought shotgun yesterday.

I think anything from size 4 shot to size 7-1/2's would work but you might be limited to closer shots if not using loads specifically made for turkey's. You'll need to pattern whatever load you decide on to know how far you can shoot.

Turkeys are tough birds.
That being said... yes it only takes 1 pellet...
but...   most guys have stories of shooting one in the head and they flew away.
smaller shot is fine... like he said      if you're close.

If this is your first turkey hunt, why put anything to chance?
Just buy some hot loads made for turkey.

Either buy turkey loads or buy Premium hunting loads.  Do not buy game loads for turkey hunting.  I would advise against buying "game" loads for any type of hunting.  Game loads are cheap because they use cheap components.  Especially soft lead that may not be round.  Most of the cost of a shotshell is in the lead.  Good quality, ROUND, HARD shot costs more than soft, egg shaped with flat spots shot.

Premium hunting loads, handicap trap loads and turkey loads use hard shot with antimony.  Some of them use specialized wads.  Turkey loads and premium hunting loads often have nickel plating or copper plating.  Nickel plated shot is top shelf. 

Game loads are crap.  Don't buy crap for a one shot hunt!

I use 4 shot with a super full turkey choke from my 870

My pa459 likes the #5 copper coated 1 3/4oz and extra full choke. @1300. 
win xx turkey.   since you just got this gun id recommend buying several different brands and se what patterns best. Try multiple chokes if possible.
