Is this a triploid or broodstock rainbow trout?

It can only be one or the other, right?   

Got him trolling a blue fox yesterday.... fought pretty good- not like a smallie but still a fun, albeit short, fight to the canoe because I didn't want him to come off the hook.  Not sure how it will taste but the meat looks good.  Let me know what you guys think.

It's an ugly son of a gun I'll tell you that. The broodstock fish I've caught usually have scarred up or bashed up looking faces from spending their lives in a tank, so I agree this is probably a triploid. Did you weigh it?

I would say brood-stocker. Fins are well rubbed (from long time in the cement pond). Maybe he just learned to not mash his face into the wall.

Biggest factor is the spawner colors and hook-jaw of a male ready to spawn. Triploids are created to never reach spawner maturity. If the fish has well-developed milt sacks, it's definately a broodstocker.

From what I've heard the triploiding process is not 100% effective and some weird "triploid mutants" result- could be one of those

Looks like a triploid to me. Fins are in too good of shape compared to brooders that I have caught and I have never caught a brooder with big shoulders, but have caught trips with large shoulders and with slightly hooked jaws/

So they still get that hook. Good to know...most I've seen didn't seem to have that much though. Still like to hear if he found any sperm sacks in it. That would be telling. It is a weird looking fish.

Interesting. I've caught thousands of trips and never seen a hook.
