great day in gmu 328
« on: December 05, 2014, 08:55:31 PM »
Recently I thought my buddy had a cabin in taneum but I was mistaken and it was actually naneum! Went out this morning after I got out of class for I go to central Washington university. Walking around a big patch of trees we came along a herd of 11 bulls about 500 yards laying in the sage. One elk was a tiny one and couldn't make out whether it was a true spike or not but sadly got a little close and saw it was 2x1.. It was a let down but started moving towards the right of them and walked 50 yards to find another 2x1 about 80 yards from me bedding down in a crevice. Started glassing the place for any more and saw another huge bull a TRUE spike! I was pump but didn't have any cover to creep on him. After waiting for a bit my buddy decided to try and work behind them to see if he can push them up to me but it didn't really work out as they took off running and hopped a fence. To my surprise 4 more bulls popped out with them. Started tracking them and about 100 more yards we heard another crack and 6 more bulls go running up the hill up back by the cabin! After they got out of sight we got on the quad to see if we circle around the earlier herd but couldn't find the spike. Instead we saw 5 more bulls and 10 does. It was an exciting day to say the least. No cows though. Deciding whether to go a little lower to look for them there or to try and stick that spike. What do you guys think?

That you don't know what you are hunting?

Ignore the haters, Mack.

Sounds like you had a great day out in elk country.

If it were me, I'd go back and try to find that spike.

Good luck.

why doesn't he know what he's hunting? he saw bulls and does... just because he can't find a cow he doesn't know what he's hunting?....

Mack if it were me I would hit the same area. If your in elk (bulls), cows should pop up sooner or later and you already located a true spike. good luck

Thanks for clearing it up. Just the way it was written brought out the sarcastic in me. Keep at it. There should be cows there somewhere and good luck.

Snowed last night and followed a lot of fresh tracks. Still no cows! Eventually saw 9 more bulls and the owner of the cabin said there was 3 feeding on the alfalfa in his yard while I was out and About.

Still a very exciting late season hunt. Time to move on to deer on the San Juan islands!
