ATV's in alaska

Looking into Alaska and possibly taking ATV we would be putting in for draw hunts that are closer to some of the road systems has anyone done this I see there are a lot of trail systems ?

Limited trails, but if you rally wanted to use an ATV, you will find 300 of your best buds from Anchorage and Fairbanks already there and farther than you will be able to go to get away from the crowds.  Not worth it to take at all or go on that adventure.  Unless you like hunting with crowds...    A couple places up the Parks hwy that have old trails, pretty abused by swamp buggies and tracked, making ATVs pretty ineffective.  The 40 mile trail is another, but again, a couple days after it opens it is closed due to the amount of animals taken, same for Glen hwy trails...  Fairbanks areas have a lot of trails, but again, if there is a trail there will ogles of people already out there... I used to ATV a lot there, but not during hunting season, as it was not worth the success ratio, use your boots or hire a plane/air boat/jet boat.  Much better option than an ATV for getting to hunting areas in AK....  Some of the big tundra buggies are pretty awesome, but an ATV isn't going to go anywhere the big boys go in those and their tracked vehicles... Anything north of the Yukon, no off road stuff...  Be a long tow north to get really disappointed in access...

Thanks for the report we were leaning towards a fly float trip when the ATV thing caught our attention.

Stay with the float trip, you'll find way more enjoyment....

FLOAT TRIP!!! All the way. That is how I will be hunting hext season. I've been doing the ATV and UTV thing for sometime now. A normal 4 wheeler from the lower 48 doesnt stand a chance on the trails here. People take their toys to a new level in AK so the normal guy really cant compete. If your machine is stock most the trails you wouldn't make it a mile. I run a pretty nice 6x6 thats anything from stock and I still cant keep up with the swamp buggies. They litterally put 4 wheelers in the bed for when they get to their hunting spot 100 miles in from the rd.

Did you put in for permits?

We use the other ATV.....the ones that eat hay.

Float hunt would be awesome. Horses are another option. Its incredible country up there! And unlike down here where simply walking around may get you some success, it's another story up there. Huge expanses of land and miles and miles of country to cover to find the right animal. When I lived there we would fill the wheelers tanks and bring gas cans also because you'll need it, we could do 75 - 100 miles a day. Trails do get nasty and river crossings are insane. (This is where I learned a 4 wheeler can float down the river with you on it!!!)  those trials taught me a lot about riding!! An atv can help u cover a lot of ground that you would have never walked or seen without one. Which ever method u choose, good luck up there!! It's a beautiful place and a unforgiving place so be prepared for whatever.  Good luck and hope to see pics and story of your adventures sometime.

Well after much discussion with the crew we have decided on a Float trip in the brooks range. Know starts the fun of researching the units and choosing a transporter.
