Is there a red antler stain?
« on: December 14, 2014, 06:08:44 PM »
So I was wondering if there was an antler stain that would be more red in color. Several of the bucks I have shot and seen have this red color to the antlers rather then brown. One of the little fork horns I shot a few years back almost looked blood red. Is there a red stain or is there a way to preserve this? I have tried putting a clear coat over the antlers right away but it has not worked out like I wanted. I dont mind the brown but I would love to be able to have them the color they were when the buck was shot. Here is an example of my 2012 buck. You can tell how red it is vs the brown of the mount.

Might try some Red Mahogany wood stain. Try on backside first.
We give your trophy that final compliment!

it you wanted to try a paint option, Burnt umber seems to match blacktail and rosevelt elk pretty well.

The red tone antler stain that Research manikin sells will do the trick.  I have an extra bottle if you would like it, If you coming by Toledo in the near future your welcome to stop by or just order it from them.

I have used western red cedar mixed with a little walnut Minwax stain on elk antlers with good results.

For future bucks you plan to have mounted, ask your taxidermist to not clean and clear-coat the antlers. Every taxi has his/her own idea of how a buck should look, but unless you tell them 'your vision', they won't know.
