Mossyrock Area 5052 January Cow Tag
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:03:48 AM »
My daughter got a January muzzle loader cow tag for the Mossyrock Elk Area #5052.

Any suggestions on where to hunt?  It is a pretty small unit for this January hunt and only 8 tags, so I'm betting we can cover most of the open areas in a few days.  We won't have any time to scout, just new years day and weekends, so any help getting my daughter a cow would be greatly appreciated.

She did get a bull out of the Mudflow a couple years ago on a youth tag!  Let's hope this tag is just as successful!

When my daughter and I drew cow tags for Raymond we would stop and knock on farmers doors. Even the ones that the locals said we would not get permission from would see that my daughter had a tag and would let us hunt. We got onto a lot of land by just stopping and asking to hunt. We also got a lot of info from HW members too. The problem w/our tags was that they opened the day after the regular elk seasons closed in Dec. The were run all over the place and not calmed down yet. Your tag should be better because they have had time to settle down from a long season.

Very little public land to hunt in that area.  A hunt club leased out from weyerhaeuser the best elk hunting in the 5052 area.  The lease is the ridge that is between hyw 12 and longbell rd (Locals call it "Buck mtn, "The Ridge" or the "Hump").  There are a lot of signs that mark the lease.  WDFW manages some land by the damn off of Young rd for Tacoma Power.  Late in the year elk do head down into that area.  Also you might want to park on Young rd and bail off toward the Cowlitz river below the dam.  Like I said there aren't a lot of elk in this area but with the lease this is really your best option.

So that was a club that leased all that land. Hunted there a couple years ago in late archery with my cousin and his wife. We saw a nice 4 point bull on the road but he ran to the right into the Winston area and stood there in the field looking at us. It was frozen and crunchy then. We were thinking of heading down there this year until we checked a Weyco map showing it as leased. Another cousin hunted ML down there a lot. Maybe talk to the club that leased it and they may let you in.

Any idea which club leased the land and how to contact them?  I looked at the Weyco site that they have for the permits and leases but that info isn't published there.  Did a Google search and couldn't find the info.

That's not the case. But a lot of it has been!

Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

I drew the November Raymond tag in 2003. Good tag if you can get permission to hunt the farm fields. My dad drew the January Raymond tag in 2006. We got permission to hunt the farm fields. Filled it within the first few minutes of the opener. It was more of a pull up and shoot tag, than a hunt. Damage control hunt, but we were happy to fill his tag.

The Weyco lease holders cant let just anybody hunt there leases . At the begining of the lease agreement they have to submit a list of hunters that will be on the lease . Not on the list cant be in there .

Thanks Renmar.  Good to know and sincerely appreciated.

As per someones suggestion, I just downloaded onXHunt for my iPhone.  Very useful to find the few areas available to hunt.

Turns out that onXHunt app is a very buggy. Just thought I would mention that since it is so expensive for an iPhone app.

I wanted to piggyback on this thread.  I drew a master hunter cow tag for 5052.  Started yesterday through end of January.  Ive scouted months prior.  Got permission for 1 private field ( advised elk wont be there unless snow pushes them in).  Found a couple small slivers of open land between leases.  10 permits given out for this hunt.  Saw 2 of other permitees in area between leases on opening day.  I did find a nice heard of elk on a private field, found owners, but told to get lost.  Scruffy 37 yr old isnt as cute as a daughter I guess.  Anyway, does anyone know owners of some of the xmas tree farms that might allow a master hunter in?  Or another contact?  This tag is for depredation so there has to be some property owners that want a hunter to help keep elk out.  Thanks group!

XT,  I have the app for android and it's even more buggy than the iphone app.   I have heard the chip is better.
