I built a 458 on a mauser action would have chosen a different caliber but the action was already opened up for belted mag. cases. I call it a 49-90 belted express. they make a great cast bullet rifle for a fun low recoil rifle. you might try a few cast bullets.

I would argue unless you cant see thru the open sights, you really don't need a scope. these have limited range, well within the open sight ability. Brush, quick shots, any angle, perfect! I shoot cast, FMJ and even "plinker" rounds that my nephew used to shoo at targets before I put on a brake. Great addition to your gunsafe!

Loaded up with some of the 350gr bullets at over 2500 fps (very doable!) it would make a great 200 yard elk gun. The trajectory is better than people think if you move away from the round nose bullets. I have my 458 Arnold sited in at 150 yards with the 450gr TSX. 300 yard hits aren't tough at all with a slight hold over.

agree, 200 yds is fine open sights, as if I said, you can see well enough to use them...

Great feedback, thanks guys.

Funny...had a friend (member here) ask me today what the heck I was doing buying an Elephant gun.  I finally figured it out.  I told him it was because I had watched too many Steward Granger movies as a kid.... :chuckle:

.458 is a little small for a Steward Granger gun, isn't it? :chuckle:
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."
