Musket Caps!
« on: December 31, 2014, 02:08:53 PM »
Why in the world are they so scarce?! I have been to every sporting goods store in Walla Walla Milton Freewater and Hermiston. Nobody has them. Should I just order a new Nipple for my  CVA Elkhorn and run No. 11's?

I haven't had any issues finding them.  Even sold some to other members here.

But I am westside.  I keep both nipples in my gear stash, and use whichever I need.  BUT, I do prefer the muskets

Check with Sabotloader. He will provide information that the right #11 cap is better than a musket cap. They burn hotter and fit tighter.

I would go with the #11's all day versus the Musket cap.  Just make sure you get #11 MAGNUM caps or the RWS 1075+ caps and a good nipple.  One that the caps fit on tightly.  Also then get a Traditions brass capper - excellent capper for installing #11 caps.

Love my musket caps and they are readily available.  Find them and buy 300 or more....then you won't ever have worry about hem for a long time.

On my elkhorn it looks like the bolt face has an "extracter". do I have to change anything there when I switch the nipple?

I just switched to musket caps after using #11's for many years.  So far I like them better, since they seem quite a bit hotter.  I haven't had trouble finding them on the west side.  Like Jrebel, I stock up on caps when I see them.

I've never had an issue picking them up at 49 degrees.. But that is all the way up in Omak.
I am not opposed to golf, for I suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering deer.

Did you have a musket nipple?  Did you crimp the flanges?  Mine have never fallen off but I crimp my flanges so it holds the nipe better when hunting.
