I was in your position two years ago.  A book I would recommend is Joan Bailey's "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves", it guides you through the first year of the pups life.  It was a huge help for me and it relieved me of the stress that I would ruin the dog or not train him right.  The first year is about bonding, exposure, and building confidence in the pup.  This last summer my pup was 1.5 years old and I sent him to a trainer for the summer but that was due to the fact that I wanted a broke finished dog and didn't feel like I had the time or experience to accomplish it on my own.

If you just want a good hunting dog, read some books and join a club or find someone nearby with some experience to help you along.  If your pup comes from a hunting background (pedigree), you shouldn't have any problems.  The most important thing to always remember is PATIENCE and have FUN.

How old is the pup?  Lets see a pic.  I love setters, I think I'm going to get one for my next bird dog.

If you ever near Seattle and would like to take the dogs out for some training I would be more than glad to help ya.

Jake

I don't think you will find anyone around MV. I live in  Burlington and could help out a little but I am needing help also. I have a 12 month old pointer and I have only had labs in the past also. The Perfection Kennel DVD's are good but save yourself the $150 and borrow them from me. I am to the point where I need a hand with some of her training. Maybe we can help each other out. PM me. I have an unlimited amount of pigeons available for training so that is nice. As far as professional trainers, there is Conway Kennels but there mostly lab guys, there is Acme Gun Club in Acme but he is not really a trainer, and thats about all I know. Good luck with your search. PM me if you have any questions. I will try to help.

I have had 2 Brittanys, 1 German shorthair, and 1 German wirehair, personally trained by Reliable Kennels in Moxee, WA, and have had great success. The owner is very honest, fair, and great to deal with! If you want some info PM me. He would be more than happy to talk to you and at least discuss what your goals are for both you and your dog. That is all the info I can give you is to talk to someone who trains for a living! Other than that the more you hunt them the better they will be. Great Choice on the setter they are awesome dogs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Hey RPM, I might take you up on that offer after the season. Also, Jackall what was your favorite breed out of those listed? I really like hunting behind a pointer. I don't think I could send my dog off for more than a few weeks. I will just try to train her myself.

Shannon, my favorite breed is the Brittany! Only because they are small and the 2 that I have had are great! My pick is based only on my personal preferance. My Brit is 3.5 yrs, my shorthair is 10, and my wirehair is 7, and with the exception of my shorthair slowing down a little I couldn't pick one based on only hunting ability. Some trainers don't like to train the brittany as much because they tend to be a little softer. So you just have to pick a crazy one. I have never owned a english setter but have heard great things about them.
