still hunting!!
« on: December 30, 2014, 05:44:49 PM »
Posted a while back how I got permission to hunt San Juan island. Well went out Friday saw 4 deer total but nothing got closer than 40 yards. I use a recurve now so 40 yards is out of my shooting range. Went out again today to see if I can feel my tag before the season ends tomorrow. My dad saw 2 this morning but was again too far to shoot. No more than 1 hour and 30 mins ago I had 4 deer come with in 20 yards of my blind but wasn't giving me a shot. They eventually walked away. Almost giving up hope I saw a doe come out of the tree line just right in front of me. Made a bee line for the apples I had out in front of my blind. It was about 8 yards away from but didn't turn its body to give me a shot... I couldn't get control of my leg as it was shaking vigorously. I think I was too excited. Just as quick as it showed up it was gone. Ate one apple and probably got spooked from my excitement. Should be skinning a deer right now but there's always tomorrow!!! Wish me luck on the last day!

Good stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Be ready in the morning.
Pavement, crowds and inaccurate rifles...
Thanks anyway.

On the islands it really helps if you can set up close to someone's rose garden.  :chuckle:

Well hunting season is over and I unfortunately didn't feel my tag. Had 3 more deer's come in and just faced the blind the whole time. I had my blind set up next to apple trees and just put apples under them. It was a lot of fun and I love being out in camp do the sport I love. I do however have some good news. My hunting partner and father took a doe on the last day of the season. It was also his 58th birthday! There's no better way to celebrate your bday than filling your tag. The tracking was the best part. There was no sign of blood for about 60 yards and it was just a little droplet. Finally we found some more and followed the trail till we came upon the deer bedded down. It heard us coming and took off once again for about another 50 yards till she finally bedder down for the last time and expired. Was very happy for my dad killing his first animal on his birthday!
