Calling mistakes
« on: January 25, 2015, 09:38:01 PM »
This is my first season hunting yotes. I was fortunate to get one to rush my call a few weeks ago but have been skunked the last 4 outings. At my last stand I started with the foxpro coyote locator call and had 2 howl back right away within 100 yards. Never saw them but they sounded real close. Not knowing what to call next I went to the lightening jack. Not sure if that spooked them or what but they never howled back or got any closer. Any tips on what I did wrong? Will dogs come to the call if I keep howling? What's a good sound to keep them interested after the locator? Hunting EWA sage/farm land.

Some times just howling and then sit quiet for up to half hour works much better than calling.   Also could you in large your font. These ol eyes have a heck of a time reading those tiny words
https://www.howlforwildlife.org/take_action  It takes 10 seconds and it’s free. To easy to make an excuse not to make your voice heard!!!!!!

Try the sitting silent for a bit if they are that close or one thing I like to try is to just do a lip squeak for a bit. That can be effective on close dogs.

Don't think of it as mistakes, just part of the learning curve. Count on it taking a year or so to get to the point where you kind of feel like you know what you are doing. I called in three in three different stands on Saturday.  Each one reminded me about the need to be patient and very watchful. No need to over do it with the calling, a little distress and howl goes a long ways.
