I've been contemplating a range gun/home gun. been doing a little research on the Hi-Point brand through Cabala's site. Seeing nothing bad but the weight....

I've never heard anything bad as far as them malfunctioning. I personally have seen a few problems with Taurus which would make me not want to trust my life or a hunt to one.

If you're looking for entry level, spend a little bit more money and get a SCCY.

Save your money for awhile longer. You'll be thankful later. Get something with tighter tolerances, better finish, and resale value.

For an economy semi compact 9mm they are solid and i havent had a hiccup out of mine . If that what you are looking for as that is pretty much what they produce .

How cheap are they?

You can get a really cheap pistol that is super dependable....S&W shield, Ruger SR9(c). Do a little research and get an accurate reliable gun.

Usually hi-point does not fit both those qualities.

Thanks everyone. I'm thinking about a 45...but this hi-point one is MASSIVE! to big for my liking. Anyone got something thats a good deal? I think the 9mm would ok, as far as a "sit in a night stand" gun..only.

Nobody wants to get shot with a 9mm.

But if you want a .45 ruger also makes an SR45

. I have no experience with it, but if is shoots like the SR9 or SR4 it should be a sweet ride. You can buy one for $400 dollars. PM carpsniperg2....he is a ruger dealer and has great deals to forum members.

You are looking for a gun to use in the last resort in defense of your life, or someone else. Get something that will work, what is your life worth?

Is it worth more than saving 300$.? Maybe you should stick with a ball bat until you can buy a used Glock or something. I am guessing but I bet you can buy a gun for 3-400, that is a known good gun. Glock, S&W, Springfield.

If you can't save anymore money, then get the Hi-point. But, I would recommend saving a little more and getting one you really like. I shot a HI point one time and if the purpose of your purchase is to squeeze the trigger when needed then it will work. But if you buy a gun you should enjoy shooting it also, and they are not that comfortable to hold.

I have the 9 and the 45 shot hundreds of rounds 1 or 2 jams on the 45 with cheap ammo. Weird thing is anything I have shot with either one has ended up with holes in it, maybe a little heavy but then again so is my ruger 44 super redhawk.
But that was of course before ALL my firearms sank to the bottom of the bay

Personally if I was going with a 9mm I would go with the ruger lc9s. Great gun. Paid 360$. Haven't had one jam yet with mine. Have shot 200 rounds through it so far.

I heard a lot of reviews stating magazine issues with the high point. They are big and heavy. Not the prettiest gun so I pass on it.

don't shoot wolf or tulammo ammo in any gun except a revolver you don't care about. try to get a good used gun . if you don't have the funds don't buy new. mike w

yes, IF it is all you can afford. the old hi-points had problems, they now are guaranteed to function. I have heard mostly decent things about function. ergonomics? looks? maybe not. like the guys said, if you can put away 350 or more you can get a good brand, but from what I have seen the hi-points tend to work, and if it is all you can afford then 150$ hi-point beats throwing rocks...
