jetty fishing and/or surf perch fishing westport
« on: January 31, 2015, 10:31:26 PM »
Hey I want to start fishing for surf perch and/or off the jetty in Westport.  Is there anyone that can give me information, tips, or would be able to meet me there sometime to show me how to do it?

Watch your tides and weather closely. If the weather is coming from the SW, the South side where the best perch fishing is will be really tough to fish or even dangerous.

Don't forget about the bay side for sea bass   Herring chunks for sea bass, and clam necks for the perch. The fog horn is the land mark you want to start fishing at

If you want greenling, bass and lingcod, hit the North side of the jetty and go out past the green buoy.  Use sand shrimp or clam necks for greenlings then hook a small greenling about 5 feet under a large float and let it swim along the edges of the rocks for big lings!!  March and April are great months for shallow lings.  Bass, I use a white or chartreuse 2" grub on a jig or a Rapala.  Once again, watch our tides and weather direction!

I hooked a huge King once on a lead-head jig casting distance off the end of the jetty.  Surprised the poo out of me.  It got off at the boat but I would have had to let it go anyways.  It was over 20 pounds.

It will not be a good time to jetty fish this week-end 20 to 30 mile winds and 20 foot seas will make it miserable and dangerous.

I love to fish off that jetty. There are great fish caught off of it. I never start fishing before the green can. Wear a good set of boots that have good traction. Lot's of big holes you can fall in if you slip. It's a good hike to get out there. You wont be running back and forth to the truck so pack everything in one trip. Just my  :twocents:

How heavy of a jig head would you use?
