First pheasants for both of us

Lue and I went to Cooke Canyon yesterday for our first taste of bird hunting.  We're both hooked, it was a great day.  The only thing I should have done different is to ask for hens instead of roosters.  For the same price we would have had 7 instead of 5 birds to practice on.  Also, Lue was a little hesitant to pick up the roosters; smaller hens may not have been as intimidating.

How did the dog do? I went to Cooke Canyon on Sunday for the first time

She did great.  I had them mark the birds for us, but after the first one it was obvious when she was on a scent and I had to keep her close so she wouldn't flush before I was close enough.  One got away because its flight path was directly over her head and by the time it was high enough that I was comfortable shooting, it was too far and I didn't hit it.

It's 10 minutes NE of Ellensburg, and they do a nice job for providing a place to train your dog.

Cooke Canyon is great, but they only go from Aug to the end of March

Hey doubletall that's a great lookin pup how old is she ,was just curious which breeder she came from ? I have a chocolate female that is 13 months they look like they could be related . Oh and Cooke canyon is a great place to go to get your pup birdie.

She'll be a year old in March and she's from Ireland Farms on Harstine Island.

I think this might be the same breeder I got my chocolate from. Has been a great family dog, very birdy, been learning all I can about getting into hunting because it's so much fun watching him get on a scent. I've heard it called helicopter tail.

you are on the edge of season for them, most close for brooding times for resident bird populations..

in coulee city there is a place that is year round that I have used in the past, no extra fees or memberships.. Rusty H. is good people, great for working dogs and tuning in off season. they even have rooms to stay in. This used to be Pitts Game Farm until Joanne passed and Jim sold out. normally pheasants and chukars are available year round there.

I looked into Hidden Ranch but from Tacoma with the extra travel time I'd probably want to spend the night which makes it more than Cooke Canyon after a few trips.  I still may go check it out sometime before fall.
