Anybody have any recipes for them?Going out this weekend,going to be easy shooting.

Skin/gut, toss in crockpot/slow cooker add carrots, onion, potatoes, etc pour a can of cream of mushroom soup over it add a half can of water, simmer until tender.  I've cooked lots of fowl this way when I was in college.  You can even put it in frozen, prep the night before, toss in the fridge nad then on the cooker the next morning when going to work.  Dinner is ready when you get home.

The whole bird hunting routine is new to me.One other question.How long is it safe to keep them from the time they are shot in the field to the time I clean them at home.Should I field dress them like any thing else to cool the meat?

You should clean them quickly for the best results. I like to make dove/pigeon fajitas. Dice up some bacon and start frying it. Dice up your breasts and add them to the bacon add fajitas seasoning to your liking. In a separate pan sautee peppers and onions. Add them together in a warm tortilla with all your favorite fixins and enjoy!

If you have a cooler with some ice, just toss them in, they'll be fine until you get home, even overnight.  Birds cool pretty quickly, unlike a big game animal.

there are some easy gutting tricks for quickly throwing the major guts out. that cools them quickly, once you know how you can do it in 30 seconds or so.
Cut all the way around the butt hole, sharp knife,  hold by the wings, lift high, bring down quickly on to your knees where elbows stop, quickly. wa la guts are on the ground between your feet.

Same way I do it.  Although I do not use a knife.  Just get your thumb under the tip of the breast and lift the breast while pulling the tail back.  Will tear a nice hole for everything to fly out.  30 seconds would be if you failed to toss four or five times   Keep in a cooler four or five days no problem at all as long as you do not skin them.  The skin works as a good sealer from the environment.  Just keep them dry by elevating above the ice and water.  One of those Coleman electric coolers is outstanding for the traveling bird hunter as you do not need ice or anything that will create moisture.

Thanks for the help.Went yesterday,very windy.Still managed to bring home 5,lost 6 in the apple bin pile where I was shooting.Not to bad I guess for a rookie shooter on a 12 guage.Should be better today,going to try again.One thing I did learn,they are very fast in the wind!
