Help with Muzzle Break
« on: February 16, 2015, 04:37:30 PM »
I have a Winchester model 70 chambered in 300 Win. Mag. I would like to have a muzzle break installed on it. I am looking go reduce recoil as much as possible. Is there a specific break you would recommend and a gun smith in the Vancouver/Longview area you would recommend to install it?

Thank you!

Shrewd Precision 7 degree is one on my favs.

Killer Innovations look pretty good too.

A brake shouldn't be more than $110 installed with the brake. At least that's what I pay.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

Clark Co. Gunsmithing has done some limited work for me. He's a straight up guy but has a fairly long waiting list sometimes. I wouldn't recommend Brightwater. I don't know the others around.

I think my Defensive Edge brake was $80.00 by itself, then I got charged $80 to install.
Pallozzo Precision gets about $200.00 installed give or take a few bucks.

$160 still is pretty good. I guess I'm spoiled by my local gunsmith.

I have used and use many different muzzle brakes and by far on my .300 Win Mags. Vais Arms muzzle brakes have worked the best for me when it comes to reducing recoil. I have Benchmark barrels in Arlington instal them.

Thanks for the help guys.  I think I have decided on a break from Defensive Edge. Does anyone have experience with their breaks?

Have one on a 30-338 Lapua Improved that shoots Berger's 230's and for a gun that still weighs under 12lbs the DE brake made it a pleasure to shoot.

There are a lot of really good brakes out there.  Defensive Edge, Jim See's Muscle brake, Kirby Allen's Painkiller brake are the 3 I've used and I couldn't honestly say one was any better than the other two.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so you'll have to decide what "look" you like best.

But, I will caution against a ported style brake that has round holes all the way around it as they tend to blow dirt all over hell when you are shooting prone.  I've had two like this and hated both of them for this reason.

second the Defensive Edge brake! Have had 3, and they are very effective. Also second the comment on porting all the way around. Brakes like Vias are great for recoil and decibels, but when prone shooting, as many of us shoot (I rarely shoot from a bench), they throw way too much dirt around!

BIGGERHAMMER do you know of any good gunsmiths in the central wa. Area?

None worth mentioning around here. That's why my stuff goes to Benchmark in Arlington or another custom smith I use in Texas.

To the OP, if a side port is needed. I would go with a "Muscle" brake. I have several that work well with the larger cartridges. Benchmark installed them also.

Grizz Precision is in Rainier.

They charge 75.00 to install your brake and have a short turnaround.
