Nice looking barrel.  Just out of curiosity, is the fluting between the chamber end and gas block just for  weight reduction since it is hidden by the handguard?

Yes, weight. It allows us to have a stiffer barrel at the same weight of a thinner non-fluted barrel. And the additional surface area allows for faster cooling.
