Rimfires
« on: April 03, 2015, 05:57:20 PM »
I haven't seen a lot of space or even threads about rimfires on here. Am I missing something? Possibly in the small game area or ...?
Anyway, I saw that Cabela's was advertising the Marlin Model 60 DLX (has checkering & sling swivels) advertised for $179 a couple of weeks ago. I called and got my name on the list for a 'rain check'. Hopefully I'll be able to get one. I already have the 60SS (stainless steel) version. When I got that one a couple of weeks ago I had to do some scope swapping to get all the .22's set up the way I wanted them & have been bore sighting and testing (fine-tuning) them ever since.
I'm curious to know what you all shoot as far as .22s are concerned. I know there's an ammo shortage, but I'll bet most everyone on here owns at least one rimfire.
I've been thinking about a .17HMR, but..........well, let's just say I'm still thinking about it.
I'd welcome any and all input - especially what loads have worked best (and worst) for you. I hear a lot of negative things about the Remington Thunderduds, but have never had any issue with them.

Spend a little and get a rem. Nylon.

When rem. could build a decent product.

I shoot a Ruger takedown ss synthetic with a simmons 4x32 most of the time but i also have a Henry golden boy that is beautiful and i left that one with just open sights. As 2labs suggested the remington nylon series was good i had a nylon 66 as child and wore it out but that was back when bricks of thunder bolt were about $7.00 my favorite to shoot with.I also had a 522 viper and it was a good gun too but i pointed it the wrong direction twice one day while out shooting and my dad smashed it over a rock  :chuckle: I also had the standard savage model 64 and i cut the bbl down to 16.25 and that thing was super accurate i killed tons of rabbits with it and it would eat anything i put in it.

i lusted after one for 20 years found one at a price I couldn't pass up, sold my marlin and quit smoking plunked down the cash. It's killed coyotes, coons, ground hogs, grouse, rattle snakes, and a truck load of grey diggers. It may be my favorite gun

The mag version would be fun I bet.  I found a good deal on the LR with a scope.  Yeah, grouse fear it.  Wish we had lots of squirrels.  :chuckle:

I like my 77/22 boat paddle better than any of my other .22's.

I also have had great luck with Remington Thunderbolt ammo. Works fine in all the 10/22's I've run it through and it's as accurate as any other bulk .22 I've tried.

Thanks, Carp. I should keep you in mind for that and some other things, too. If I Start saving right now, I can probably come up with that in a little less than a year - maybe. Then save another 3 months for a scope. I appreciate you posting that. I should put a picture on my refrigerator just to keep it from sliding down the priority list. I have three Remington Model Fives - a youth .22LR, a full-size .22LR, and a .22 WMR. I like them all, but looking at that Ruger just gets my heart to pumping. The first rifle I ever bought for myself was a Ruger M77 in 7mm Rem Mag. I loved that rifle. I'm assuming that the rimfire version is the same quality (way above average for a .22LR nowadays).

I can't tell you how many times I have thought about this (in walnut, not black plastic), but just haven't done it.  With the special Burris scope, very interesting.

Sorry, no, have never touched one (except on Gun Broker, EuroOptic, etc.).

I traded a Ruger MkII Target model 22-250 for a Marlin 917 Varmint about two years ago.  One of the better decisions I've made in my life!!  I've put down around 65 ground squirrels in the last week, and used less than 150 rounds.  I'm a huge fan of the 17HMR because I can actually find ammo for it, it's very accurate, and I don't need earplugs to shoot it.  I have the same rifle in 22 magnum, and a Remington 522 Viper in 22LR, but I can't hardly find ammo for them, so I stick with the 17

Have a CZ American, excellent rifle.  The only thing I find a little different about the rifle is it shoots the cheap ammo better than its shoots the expensive target stuff,  go figure.  Only thing I have done to it is install a trigger kit that I think cost me about $15 and installed in minutes.

My wife shoots a Ruger american rimfire .22 full size , I have a the shorter version in .17, a mossberg 46b which really does it's job, and a marlin 22mag bolt( another used gun worth every penny I paid for it) :twocents:, and to mix it up a little a Hopkins and Allen .25 rimfire and about 40 precious rounds ( if you thought .22 was getting high$$) left and a Swiss vetterli .41 rimfire but thats been converted to centerfire so I can shoot it. I really enjoy the Rugers they are money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

On ebay, look for CZ trigger kit.  A series of springs and thin metal tubes and a set if instructions is all it really consists of, but it does make a difference.  $18 + S&H

I have a 10/22 that was my first gun when I turned 12. Back when you could get the 550 bricks for 7 bucks I probably put 15,000 rounds through the darned thing and never ever cleaned it! Back before the 10 shot clip ban was repealed, I used to have six ten-shot clips that I would try and shoot and switch as fast as possible. Makes you wonder why its not a very accurate gun nowadays!

Recently sold my ultimate 10/22 and picked up a CZ 455 varmint precision trainer. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Waiting on the rail to come in so i can mount the scope, plus I sent the bolt to Ohio for a tactical knob and the barrel is heading to my smith for threading. Going to wait till its all together before I decide if I need the Yo Dave trigger ( EBay) or maybe a Timney. Also have a Ruger mark lll 22/45, a JCHiggins .22 and a Savage Mark ll TR in .17 hmr .  The 22/45, CZ and Savage all share a SWR suppressor.

I have a Remington 511 with a Leupold 4x scope.
I use it for old cans, grouse and just as a "fun" gun.
Might switch out the scope for a NewEngland peep sight.
Never really saw the need or use for .22 birshot,I have shot it, just not much.

.22 birdshot is very good for rattlesnakes or for killing pest birds at close ranges if there are a lot of houses around

Have more than I'd like to admit, especially to my wife.

My favorite would probably be the Winchester 9422 High Grade I picked up for $300 about 18 years ago.  My PMR30 is a lot of fun to shoot but I can't screw my suppressor on it so my true favorites would have to be any 22 or 17hmr I own that I can screw my TBAC 22L-1 on to.  Shooting these dang things suppressed, is just soooo darn fun!!

That's funny, not really though, the second gun I purchased with my own money as a young teen, was a 9422M from the local Coat to Coast store.  Only had it about two years and for reasons I still don't know, my dad loaned it to a friend who promptly had it stolen from his truck and I never saw it again.  That was 32 or 33 years ago and I'm still pissed off about it.  I couldn't afford to shoot it nearly as much as I did my Marlin 39A which was the very first gun I bought with my own money, mail order from Montgomery Wards.  If recall, I paid $150 for the 39A and $275 for the 9422M and the 9422M came with this shelf like thing so you could mount it on the wall horizontally.  I still have the Winchester wall mount thing but not the rifle, sure wish it was the other way around though.  >:(

I've got a 511X also.  Best squirrel gun I ever bought.  Got two seasons of squirrel hunting out of it before uncle sam messed with me and I moved to a state with no squirrels.

Wadu - is your Rem Model Five made in Serbia? My three are. I sure would like to find a source for some spare magazines. I found one place, but they want about $22 each. That's outrageous. I should have bought spares when I bought the guns at Cabala's. They were only about $6 each. I don't want to pay $22 for a $6 magazine. As far as I can tell, the guns are still made and now carry a S&W brand. Great guns - simple and accurate. Interesting thing about my wife's youth model - it likes just about any ammo you put through it. The other two aren't real finicky, but not as flexible as hers.
Maximum utilization of available resources.
