Best all around unit/area for elk hunting..
« on: April 07, 2015, 07:39:42 AM »
What do you guys think is the very best unit/area for elk ? I don't care about the famous, HONEY HOLE crap either. That's not what I'm asking. I haven't hunted elk in 26 years because of all the nut jobs fighting over an elk that was shot by a 10 year old up Joe Watt, no kidding..
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

For most folks it is the area where they or their group in most familar or successfull. People seem to go back to the same area more based on good feelings rather than results. It may depend on what kind of elk hunting a person wants to do too.

Rifle,Muzzy,Bow, Remote, Car camping, less hunter, bulls, or cows etc.??????????????????????

If you haven't hunted elk in 26 years then why would you even care?  Perhaps trying to gather info to share with someone else "in trade"? :dunno:

I don't think there is a best unit for a general hunt, but if you are talking about a permit hunt then that is a different story. PM sent.

Doesn't the Winston unit usually have the most elk killed according to the harvest report?  Of course that is due to the high number of people who hunt it but it also has one of the biggest populations of elk in the state.  You could also make an argument for Lewis River, Willapa Hills, Coweeman, Ryderwood, etc who all have high numbers of elk harvested as well.

I'd say SW Washington is out of the running due to hoof rot and Weyerhaeuser access permits.

Lewis River looks good on paper because it is a HUGE area.

I've hunted, Greenwater, Randle, Kapowsin, Taneum, Clockum (?) Peoh Point, Salmon La Sac and everywhere in between those areas. BUT, those were the good old days. I don't want to waste 12 points on a crappy bull. I have a 6x5 on the wall and would like a pig. I'm not much of an elk or deer hunter anymore because of all the crappy rules that defeat a hunters success, especially since I'm disabled. We get the worst areas to hunt in, period..

I've never hunted the Blues, but I can't hump the hills anymore due to my knees, so that's out, unless I can get ATV access to a very good spot, from the game dept. I got info on Lick Creek at the WDFW there, but I can only ride 2 miles from the parking lot, nice huh !!

Bobcat....don't forget the thinning of the St Helens herd. This has had a tremendous impact on multiple units in SW WA.

How would you define how to compare to come up with a best area?  % harvest, overall harvest, access?  trophies?
