Icant find any information on calling that is better than Wayne Charletons stuff,i have copied him in situations that he talks about and not even kidding they work, but don't get me wrong im another guy who has been scared into bow hunting 5 , oops 6 year ago and have not had a clear shot at the darn critters yet.OOO Boy have I come close though, and both times it  was Waynes stuff to a tee. You really should give him a read or listen, depending on how old you might be, darn eye doctor is no help !!As for annoying people don't get me started on that one,,,,,For the life of me I cant understand a lot of calling by the pros or amitures can be a good thing, not saying im the brains of the operation but I call just like Wayne says WHEN IT IS NEEDED,,,Iespecialy like the lost calf call suttle and anything but annoying if they are in hearing range or sight It worked for me twice and I will never forget it even though I never got a shot either time, needless to say I have a go pro mounted on my yes I know hat not my bow, thats becuose I learn hear too!!obviousely didn't learn how to spell . :dunno:

My experience has been that a majority of elk hunters walk logging roads and main trails, calling from ridge tops and other places that they think that the sound will carry from.
I have learned to get off the roads, and away from other hunters.
A lot of hunters will look down into a seemingly impassable deep drainage and bugle from up on top expecting an answer.
I get most of my action by following drainages upstream until I get to the head of the drainage, then setting up and beginning with low volume "herd talk"
It is my opinion that you cannot "out bugle" an elk, but you can sound ridiculous.
Elk rarely are excited unless they have a reason to be.
Loud full volume bugles coming from ridgelines and main roads/trails will rarely get a response, however if you are down in the thick stuff and start out low and slow, then build the excitement...
it is all about making a realistic presentation, much like fishing.
Sure, some hunters get lucky, but to consistantly call in elk you must think about where the elk actually are, then go to them and call.
You hear stories about elk coming in from long distances, but the majority of elk that come to my calls are within a few hundred yards already.
In SW Washington the woods swallow a lot of sound.
It is amazing to me to be involved in a screaming match with a bull, sometimes several bulls, and then meet another hunter on the way out, or at a gate, and have them complain about how "the elk just are not talking"
Although I have had the occassion where other hunters heard the commotion, snuck in on the herd I was working and shot an elk with no idea that I was there,  :bash:

I had the same question you did.... Last year was my first year using calls and only my 2nd year bow hunting elk. I got into a swampy area w/ my buddy setup below where he had located a nice bull on his trail cams. Let out a bugle (using a reed and grunt tube I practiced a lot with and drove my wife nuts in the off season). THis was my first setup and I got a response from far away. I responded back with a bugle, lip bawl, then chuckle. Thought it was too good to be true and that I was probably calling in another hunter as it got closer and closer. Then I saw the big tan body show up  below me out of nowhere and knew it was for real. It was a nice 6x6 bull and tore up some trees and screamed in our faces although my partner setup below never could convert. was fun and i'll be back at it next year. I wouldn't worry about other hunters.
