338 Edge at 2368 yards
« on: May 25, 2015, 09:33:13 AM »
Did some shooting yesterday and finally found a spot out of the clouds to stretch out a bit. The best we could do up top was 563 yards, came down a little lower and found this spot.

The target is the white rock at 2.5 MIL up and .5 Mil right of center. The rock is about 1 MOA by 1.75MOA, so I'd call it about 25"x45". It's not a super small target but that's the best we could spot over there. The impact is right under the rock just right of center.

Here's a youtube link, but I can never get these to embed properly.

 Looks like a good time. We managed to get out yesterday for a few hours scouting for shooting spots. Found a good spot for 650 might get 800 if you worked it right, and one that may work for 1050.

The biggest problem I've found is that the good long range spots are all at higher elevation. At that point you're at the mercy of the weather. It's annoying to drive nearly 2 hours and get fogged out! :bash:

That particular rifle is a Jim Borden BRL switch barrel (270 RUM, 7mm RUM, and 338 Edge) with an NXS 5.5-22x56 scope mounted on a 40 MOA rail. The load is a 300gr Berger OTM and H1000  in Nosler brass moving at 2880 fps. It took 98.6 MOA of adjustment to make the hits. That meant maxing out the scope, then holding 5.5 MOA in the reticle. I actually made a deal to sell the rifle while shooting yesterday. There's no better sales tactic than making hits at over 2000 yards. :chuckle: Once the other guy comes up with the money he can have what's left of the barrel life after I'm done with it.

The 338 had the best luck making hits at the 2368 yard target. Also along for the ride was my 375 BME (a pile of parts slapped together as an unfinished project  ;)) and a couple of Striker pistols. The pistols didn't fare so well at that range. The 284 needed over 150 MOA to get that far. I tried dialing the 48 MOA in the scope, then holding 100 MOA high, but didn't have much luck; I don't get it! :dunno: :chuckle: The pistols are best kept under 1400 yards, but they hold their own out to that point.

Here's another clip of my first 2 shots at the same spot.

I am thinking of having a 338 edge built after my 7 mm is completed.

Man that's a long poke! I'd be happy with a 1/3 of that distance maybe in my next life :chuckle: TMF! (to much fun)  ;)
Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.

If you want to make God laugh tell him your plans.

I have found that as well. One of our biggest problems is I can never seem to get our early enough, by the time I get to a spot to shoot its late afternoon and the wind is screaming! Part of that is because my shooting partner works nights so his schedule is a little funky on the weekends compared to mine.
