Stehekin
« on: June 04, 2015, 01:05:36 PM »
Anybody ever hunt this area?  We're considering the High Buck hunt and just wanted to pick some brains.  Will gladly do so over PM.

Thanks!

Curtis

We are taking the boat up the lake in august for fun/fishing/scouting.  I don't think I could afford the $600 outfitter

Head to Company Creek and find a fish bear eating kokanees or go to the trail at the east end of the runway at the airport for a bear.  Or look up at the mountains above the trailheads and think how nice a horse would be to carry your gear up. This is not a easy hunt. You do need a truck or you can try hitchhicking. Someone will pick you up but you might not want to tell them you are hunting :bdid:

A friend and I are also doing the high hunt this year in Stehekin. We are currently figuring out the logistics and places to hunt. We'll be scouting it out at the end of August.

A couple questions for the crowd: Does anyone know how many hunters actually go up there? Are there any issues with hikers/tourists? Finally, which campground would you recommend?

I would try to take advantage of the refuge deer from the Wolverine fire by hunting Devore or any of those creek/ridges north of the fire.  Company Creek/Hilgard if you can't get closer.  I am assuming that you are a strong hiker and able to pack some weight out.  Here is a link to the fire map.

Yeah we cancelled this one.  I'm super bummed but running an expensive boat in those air conditions just doesn't sound fun at all to me or my brother (the boat owner).  I'm 28 and this is on the bucket list so we will make it happen another year!

Thanks for all your responses guys!!

That's not an outfitter, just a ride up and back, you pick the location.  I was looking into this for my daughter and myself, but $1,200 for a ride with a 9 mile limit seems very expensive to me.  Next year, we'll take the heel-toe express.
