Late Chewuch
« on: June 14, 2015, 10:08:53 AM »
My dad drew the late Chewuch tag! We have hunted in the area for years during general so we are pretty familiar with the country but we would love any other pointers or advice on hunting it in the late season from those who have hunted it then or spent time in there during the rut. All of the other Chewuch threads have been helpful, but has anyone spent any time higher up earlier in the season? Or has anyone hunted much on the east side of the unit?

We are pumped about this hunt and want to do it right! PM me if you would like.

Photographic encouragement welcome ;)

Had the tag
honked up and shot one that was too small
I made it about a week looking at 3pts before I couldn't stand it and shot
but I  did also get the bear so have a bear tag also
good luck

My dad had the tag last year and we had a blast.  Most of the deer were on the east side of the unit in the burn but alot were just small bucks.  We didnt get much snow til the end of the hunt but we found most of the big buck sign was up high.  Just a matter of catching them coming down. Good luck!

Awesome, thanks guys. Depending on the weather, our plan is to spend as much time up high early in the season and see what that brings. What stage of re-growth is the burn at up there?

The burn is pretty thick in some spots making it difficult to pick out deer but if you glass long enough they are in there.  There was a fresh burn from last year up high up falls creek that might hold some deer this year if the snow hasn't hit by then

My dad got a nice little buck but wasnt the monster we were after.  We really whiffed on the week we chose to hunt.  Weather was perfect on our last day.  That hunt is all about catching those bruisers coming down before they get onto private land.

My dream tag in my favorite unit. Good luck. You won't need it... 9 points for me next year so I'm close!

It took me 13 points to draw this tag a couple years ago. My dad has 15 and still waiting. Tough draw for sure!

There is no amount of points that you can have that would mean you are "close" to drawing. The numbers aren't out yet for the 2015 drawings, but in 2014, of the people who applied for Chewuch with 15 to 18 points, nobody drew.
