Texas Ranch
« on: June 23, 2015, 06:22:32 PM »
I have a relative who is in search of a Texas Ranch after they sell their their one more house in Washington.  I am assuming they will be able to sell it in a month or so.  They mentioned they have looked at a few ranches but they are waiting for the last property to sell.  Some were 200 - 250 acres in size all with water on the property with pigs, turkey, white tail and mule deer on it.  He is a waterfowl hunter and that is his main target.

Question:  Looks I get to kill all the pigs I can kill.  Is the meat worth much?  Would it be worth going down to Texas to kill a truck load of pig meat?

piglets and sows are pretty good.  Nasty old boars can be tough and gamy.
But....pretty sure they still allow virtually any method for taking hogs there.  So you can use spears, full auto, aircraft....  One guy I talked said they use pit bulls to chase the hogs and then the dogs all latch on to the hog to slow it down.  They he killed the hog with a knife.

I'm thinking about heading down there to pick up some pigs with a co-worker.  I haven't had any yet, but I'm guessing it is like anything else - don't shoot the grandparents, gut and cool and get it on ice quickly and you will be just fine.

I went down there and killed two. One was pretty big the other was not but was not small. I made it all into sausage and liked it but the family didnt( I think it was too spicy). I dont know if this is true of all the pigs down there but I couldnt cook it in the house cause it really stunk up the place. If its anything Like what I got use the bbq!

They're great but like others said the big boars can get nasty. If you do shoot a boar the fist thing I do is to castrate it because I have been told that the reduces the bad taste. It probably also depends on the habitat and feed, I used to shoot acorn fed pigs but i don't know how desert pigs would be
