Need advice. First turret scope

Hi guys. Awhle ago I scooped up a new 700 in .257 wby. Then a Vortex Viper PST4-16x50 ebr-1 to put on top. Both  brand new. I bought talley rings and mounted the scope gently seated. I have new dies, brass, bullets and three different loads in mind to try. I have never used a scope with a turret before but I always thought it would be fun to have. I love the .257 cartridge and plan on using it as a fairly universal hunter respectively. Id love to be able to use this rifle potentially this fall for a hunt in Nevada I will probably never draw again. I have my go to .300 wby I know shoots lights out for me but it a lug. Anybody ever at the TSC or surrounding ranges ever be able to message me if they will be out there and would be willing to show me the ropes a little I would appreciate it. It is measured in mrad. Im understanding the basics, but I think I will be confused when its time to set the turret locks and "zero" it in and I don't want to mess it up. If I am going to use this rifle this fall I need to start shooting asap, I'm fearing if I don't get to it here soon I will be leaving it behind come October and packing my tank. I want to set this rifle to start tops at around 500 yards and depending on how it shoots possibly further, Im not so much interested in long distance more less better accuracy. I also don't want to get all fancy with 700 mods right now either if the gun doesn't shoot. I don't have a chrono yet either but I am looking to buy one.

That one has a shim zero stop. Basically go shoot and zero like you would any other scope. You can then loosen the set screws on the turret and pull the whole turret cap off without clicking any. Then put some shims in till they won't fit any more. It won't stop you right at your zero but should be within a mil or 2. As for correcting for shots either just go play with it at different ranges or get a calculator on your phone like shooter or strelok. Input all data including velocity bc temp pressure etc and try it out. It takes a bit tulonget things correct so be patient.

Thanks good to know. I figured it would be fairly simple. What is the benefit of having a custom turret built? Does it only work for one particular load? Would it be worth looking into one for this scope and if so which one?

MRAD is different than the 1/4 turn scopes from what I'm learning. I bought an MRAD, 10x42 SWFA scope. The clicks are right around 1/3 inch. I'd find someone who can school you on the MRAD scope. I'm going to need schooling too.

I don't really like the custom turrets but they do have a place. I have one on my 7 mm and trust it to 500 ish yards. I think you would be better served saving the custom turret money and buying a kestrel. I have a kestrel 2500. It tells temp pressure and wind. The custom turrets are only valid for one load and at one set of environmental conditions. I think 1 mil is roughly 3.6 inches at 100 yards. So your clicks will be .36 inches at 100 yards. It is nice that the reticle matches the turrets on those scopes.

Is your scope front focal plane or ffp?

Mild are really no different to learn than moa. Just a different measurement of angle.

The benefit is it gives you a quick and pretty accurate yardage numbers instead of mil or moa numbers.  Range the animal at 325, spin the turret to 325 and pull the trigger.  It works good out to about 400 maybe and then the downfalls start to stack.  You set the turret for one temp, altitude, pressure and humidity.  If you mess around, you will notice for the normal shots, moving the numbers around doesn't move the point of impact much, especially for hunting.

You can get the paper stickers for 25 bucks and I have found they work great.  You just need to do your homework to figure out your bullet's true bc and velocity to get your clicks at the different yardages.  I sent them the yards I wanted on the sticker and how many clicks to each and got a perfectly workable option for not much dough.

The custom turrets are nice if you have $100 to spend and particularly if you want to buy multiple turrets because you hunt dramatically different areas or shoot different bullets.

Thanks for all the tips and advice guys. I'm excited. Going to load some 100 grain nosler bt's, some 110 accubonds and some 115 tsx and see how she does.
