Puyallup GMU
« on: July 13, 2015, 12:35:36 PM »
I see this is a fairly successful unit. What's the consensus on where people are doing in this area?

I don't want to do timber farms. I can't imagine what else is left in Puyallup besides private lands.

I think the reason the harvest statistics look good, is because the majority of the unit is private land that is not open to the general public. This results in a relatively low number of hunters, and a success rate that may be better than other units. It's probably only a good unit to hunt if you have access to private land that others do not.

There is next to no tree farm access in the unit anyway.

What you imagined is correct; it's pretty much a private land show these days. There are a lot of small/medium sized plots of private pasture and forest land that hold animals- that's where the success rates come from. Getting on to any of it is the problem.

JBLM has plenty of deer. They didn't open much up the last year I registered out the, which was two years ago.

Gaining access to private land is tough, the landowners are already hit hard with folks trying to get permission to hunt.  There are a few small parcels of state and county land, but a large chunk of that has neen lost to what will be a new state park. The area has also lost a lot of access to the Nisqually Land Trust which has bought up private parcels and aquired some state lands for stream improvement along the Nisqually river and several streams.

It's too bad, there are at least three seperate herds of about 30 animals each throughout the area.

There is no greater respect to have for wildlife than to harvest an animal fairly and use it's flesh to feed your family.  ~me
