Air guns or CO2
« on: January 09, 2009, 08:30:28 PM »
I have been thinking about getting an air rifle to play with and wondered what you thought about those break open or break action ones that are like 1200 fps, just seems kind of cheesy to have a break action and be so fast, I wouldn't think it would be that accurate with the scope mounted before the break  :dunno:

What do you think, or what do you think would be a good one to start with !!!

Get a break barrel. I have 2 of them. They are both beemans, not the ones you order from cabelas, but the nice one you order from a shop.
Heres a link.
www.beeman.com

I have the R7. Its only 700 fps but its deadly accurate and really easy to cock. My grandpa just gave me a Beeman/Fienwerkbua sporter. They don't make it anymore but it is pushing 1000 fps. He had it "accurized" what ever that means, but it is really accurate.

You really need a good scope and rings, and a scope stop. It prevents the rings from sliding back on the rail. I believe beeman air rifles are the best you can buy.

I have a crosman CO2 rifle but it isn't as fast and I don't like buying CO2. :P

I would look toward a pre-charged or fixed barrel pellet gun. I have done my far share of shooting pellet guns at work and I wouldnt own a break barrel unless you dont plan on shoting over a distance. I know benjamin makes a nice precharge and the airforce talon is a great gun but a little spendy. Beeman HW77 is a great fixed barrel but its spendy, I shot one at work and have killed many rock doves at 100yards  :tung:. RWS Make a great fixed barrel as well along with a lot of others, it realy comes down to how much you can spend. :twocents:

When I'm lucky and get out in the field. :chuckle: I think that I took out around 100 rock doves in a month last summer. :IBCOOL:

I forgot one thing I would get one in 20 or 22cal becuase they seem to be the best combo of speed and knock down power. :twocents:

Ok I think I'll jump in and clarify things a bit  :chuckle: I am not really looking for a ningamatic super skookum nitro injected double barreled blazer air gun, just a decent shooter I can play in the yard and teach my kids a few things about shooting guns and handeling and safety etc... I don't intend to kill any living thing with it and I really don't want to spend a bunch of money either, I'm looking at less then $200 and that has to be with tax and license out the door !!!  :chuckle:  :chuckle:

So is there still anyone here............................hello...............................hello........................  :dunno:

BTW, Thanks for your input guys !!!

Well in that case any department store air rifle will do the trick.
Crossman air rifles have held up well for my boys.

If your just looking to plink for a few years then any brand would work crossman, beeman, gamo, daisey, and etc. I would still stay away from the break barrel guns but that's just me.  Benjamin Sheridan makes a great all around shooter the model 392. I have one and its a shooter too, they last forever and Benjamin has been around a long time. I've had mine for 12 years and it hasn't missed a lick, and you can kind of regulate the power by how many times you pump it.

You can pick up a couple cheap ones if you don't plan on keeping them forever and save your money. :dunno:

+1 for the Benjiman/Sheridan.

I like the .20 cal... shooting the cylendrical Sheridan pellets. I think they're 14 grains, twice the mass of your average .177 pellet. 3 pumps will easily go through a starling or even a pigeon. 8 pumps was about 650 fps and I killed a half-dozen dumpster diving racoons with that rifle, I think it was about 12 yards... and none of them made it out of the dumpster. They hit way harder than a pellet gun should. We bought my dad a .22 cal. Benjamin for his 50th birthday. He's clobbered quite a few garden robbing rodents and birds with it.

I tired the spring-air rifles... but the cheap ones (under $300), were hard to shoot accurately.  I put a Williams peep sight on my Sheridan, and tweaked the front sight a little...  but I still have way less than $200 in it. I'll see if I can wrangle it up and take a picture of it.
Strike Hard...
Strike Fast...
No Mercy, SIR!

I love those Sheridan Pump pellet rifles. They are extremely well made, durable, and will last a lifetime--and for under $100. I'd definitely choose one of the larger calibers. .177 is easier to find, but the larger will carry more energy down range.

Personally, I'd opt for a nice 22lr and shoot Aguila Super Colibris or CCI CB Longs.

The super colibris are only about 500fps, and are quiet enough out of a rifle to shoot indoors and no-one in the next room over is any wiser. Easily stopped with a phone book or two, and quieter than any of my air rifles.
The CCI CB Longs are a little louder, but out of a long barreled rifle they are still less noisy than most air rifles--they won't bother the neighbors. These also have enough knock-down power for up to raccoon size game (and at 3x the distance of any air rifle). Also, no special scopes are required...and no seals, repeated pumping, or C02 cartridges to refill/replace.

JMHO. I like air rifles, but I like 22lr's even more.  :P
I left it better than I found it...did you?
