I suppose you have all heard about California banning bobcat trapping. Trappers lost the battle on that a year and a half ago with the passage of "The bobcat protection act". Their Fish & Wildlife Commission had an option to keep it open but it seems things were stacked against them wildlife management and good science be damned.
Now this article
 http://www.sfgate.com/politics/article/Wildlife-advocates-expand-target-after-bobcat-ban-6440726.php
It shows what happens when the animal rights people get a little encouragement from a win.
Their trappers association was weak and not prepared. Lesson learned, we have to stay on top of things or it could happen here.

So am I understanding correctly that bobcat trapping is not actually banned in the entire state of California, but only in certain areas?

From the article:

Quote
The Bobcat Protection Act, which Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law in 2013, prevented trapping around wildlife refuges, national and state parks and wildlife areas in the state.

Sounds like it is completely banned now.

:yeah:  in the very next paragraph:

"The Bobcat Protection Act, which Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law in 2013, prevented trapping around wildlife refuges, national and state parks and wildlife areas in the state.

But wildlife advocates said it didn’t go far enough and lobbied the Fish and Game Commission to do more. Their efforts paid off with the vote last week to ban bobcat trapping throughout California."

The F&W Commission voted to ban bobcat trapping statewide on the 5th of August. Estimated bobcat population in California is 70,000. They had a statewide allowable take on bobcats of 14,400.
The F&W Commission had two options close the season or create buffer zones around areas already closed to bobcat trapping and raise the license to trap bobcats to $1137 plus $35 for each bobcat. That would have essentially killed bobcat trapping in the state anyway so this was really lost when the Bobcat Protection Act passed the State Assembly.
Governor Brown appointed two new Commissioners to the five person Commission just before the meeting. This was their first meeting and the both voted to ban trapping. It passed by 3 to 2.
I was just reading where the California Assembly has two animal rights advocates in powerful and key positions in their assembly so expect more of this kind of thing.
