Spike or not?
« on: August 17, 2015, 01:16:07 PM »
I got this bull on my cam recently. He was only there one night then sheep were herded through and the action stopped in this spot. Hopefully it bounces back. I am on the fence whether he is legal or not. It would be nice if he came back and offered up some more pics.

Looks like a legal spike to me in a spike only unit. Would like a little clearer pic to be 100% sure.

as long as his left antler is only a spike, or doesn't have extra points originating more than 4" from the skull, he is legal. Drop that hammer.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

How do you deal with an antler that is obviously broken off?

From what I understand if the break makes it a spike, it then becomes legal in a spike unit.

kinda silly if that's how it works, what stops me from shooting a branch antler, then breaking it off to make it a spike?  :dunno:

If it is broke off while growing, there is an obvious difference between that and if you broke it off. Now if he broke it off during a fight or something that is a whole new can of worms.

Why not pass on it and let him come back next season with a full rack?

Because it's legal and delicious.

And with a full rack he is no longer legal.
