Moose/Goat/Sheep Permit Process
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:50:15 AM »
I'm not sure if this has been talked about, probably has, but since I'm new, I will bring it up again. I liked my odds of dwg one of these "once in a lifetime" permits much better back when you had to put your money in upfront. If I remember correctly my odds were about 1 in 1000 vs 1 in 10,000 now. I realize the state is making a lot more money now with the $5 from each of the extra applicants and the elimination of the cost to process and send money back to the non winners, but many states still ask for the money upfront and they are doing just fine.

I agree with the odds.  I do enjoy the new cost.  The moose tag went from $1500 to $150 or something like that.  That was an upside.  But I'd rather pay the money and have a hunt of a lifetime.  Odds are now that you just won't get drawn.

Here are some things other states do.

Idaho you have a choice of what animal you can put in for....if you choose moose, you can't put in for elk or deer or other once in a lifetime hunts. Money up front for once in a lifetime hunts.

Utah, you can put in for one once in a lifetime hunt and one either deer or elk.
No money up front.

Nevada is buy a license then apply for everything like Washington

NM is apply for everything only 5 bucks a shot

Arizona is buy a license and a fee for everything.  Money up front if done on paper.

Wyoming and Colorado is money up front for once in a lifetime hunts but can apply for everything.

Oregon is license up front, can apply for everything like Washignton

California....??

The other state I hunt is Montana. You have to put money upfront for the license dwg, if you are drawn, you can put in for the Moose/Sheep/Goat permits at $783 each (something close to that) upfront. The deer/elk permits are dwg fee only.
