How to rig up to fish off the jetty in ilwaco???
« on: August 26, 2015, 01:04:48 AM »
Looking for any advice on how I need to rig up to fish off the jetty in ilwaco. My dad made it out there this last Sunday on a random trip with my brother who is even less experienced than I am when it comes to salmon fishing, they were I'll equipped but my dad still managed 1 salmon.  I want to maximize our experience as we plan to head out there this sunday. They were using a bobber with a whole herring attached since they were told to use a bobber all they had was a plastic red and white lol. Well be fishing off the rocks on the jetty and I myself have never done this. Just trying to get an idea of how to rig up correctly and effectively? Any info would be appreciated!

Never done it there, but off Depoe Bay break wall and the Newport jetty we used BuzzBombs, Super Roostertail and BF Vibrotails (think that is now under the Storm name) with great results.  If fishing perch or bottom fish the bobber thing works great!  Great way to catch Lings and Cabazon when using whole squid.  Further up the river we used bobbers with sand shrimp drifting them down the pilings with good results on fall Chinook.

He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

I use 25lb main line, slip bobber with 1oz weight, 20lb leader with your barbless 2 hook slip mooching rig.  Use whole herring or anchovies.  Fish about 10 feet down. I Was down there 2nd week of  August and limited everyday on Coho.

My better half found a Utube video that showed how to hook up a herring so it looked life-like with a half hitch around its mouth.  PS.  ask at a local sporting goods store what to get for jetty, and take a net and shoes that don't slip on slimy rocks.

Yeah we bought a big ass net, and I'm prepared for the rocks. We were planning for tomorrow, unfortunately the chinook fishery is now closed for buoy 10, but we're still gonna try for some coho. I was really looking forward to some chinook and better forcasted weather. But I can always just back track fish off the hwy.

:yeah:
Whole herring first hook thru upper lip from bottom to hold mouth closed, 2nd hook in and out same side 2/3 back and pull slip tie hooks to put bend in herring.   For coho use anchovie with plastic green head.  Wear inflatable life vest is a good idea out there.

Might want to double-check the regs.  on Chinook.  Seems like I read somewhere that the Jetty used the most liberal of the regs for Bouy 10 or Illwaco.

I believe on the jetty it goes by ocean or river rules. So probably open for Chinook. But best check to be sure.

You can keep 2 chinook off the jetty now, hatchery or wild.....as far as gear, herring or anchovies under a float fished about 6-7ft and not very far out off the rocks works good. We actually free-drift herring with no weight and crush em. Spinners work consistently and better than bait some days. It's packed down there this year with half the jetty closed for repairs and has been getting more crowded every year anyway.

 :yeah:
That's how we use to do it from the S. Jetty at Westport.  We knocked the crap out of the coho.

Figured that out late last night that you could keep 2 now. I was thinking the boundary was out west more. Went there this morning and it was windy and had decent swells out. Kinda dissapointing for a last chance at a decent salmon before hunting season starts. And was really hoping to get my dad on some fish. Didn't see a single one caught this morning
