Best Wolf Caliber
« on: August 28, 2015, 08:54:18 PM »
What do you think would be the best caliber to shoot a wolf with ? I do not want to NOT blow it to smithereens as I want a rug or full mount.

And no typical arguing please. Just answer this question plain and simple.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

I would suggest .223.

What ranges?  I'd say .223 Rem unless long range then .220 Swift

Well it depends on what class washington puts them in, small game like coyotes or other ( hahahaha the day washington has a wolf season hahaha )

If it were like coyotes id use a 22-250 and if it were in a class with a minimum of .24 cal id use my trusty 240 weatherby

just my  :twocents:

I would go 22-250 or 243 would be my picks. If I planed on cross canyon shooting something like 25-06 or 257 would probably get to go along for the ride.

Steve, the last one I saw taken (Canada) was with  a .270, very little damage to the pelt. It was a 130 gr Nosler BT, if that helps.

I was going to say .257 but if you were doing a rug you might have a size hole to try a sew shut on the exit

308.  Plenty of power, and pic your bullet depending on damage wanted.

Caliber is important but bullet choice would be very important as well . A bullet that enters with a small hole and does not exit......

My choices would be all with factory loads :  :sry:
257 Weatherby
25-06
223
Grendel ( but to heavy, Biggerhammer gun)
6.5 Creedmoor ( probably too big )
22-250

I really don't know how far of a shot, if I'm lucky enough to see one in Avery Idaho. I'm leaning towards my 700 Mountain Light in 25-06.

6mm, 243,25-06,7x57, 30-06.
Take your pick. I'd stay below 3000fps
