I say no point system at all, which I believe is what idaho has. Everyone has equal chance who buys the same special permit application. Probably sell more of them considering some of my friends don't buy in because they know they don't have a chance the first few years.

I'd turn it in and take my chances. I really feel bad for the Tucannon guys. Unless something's changed, those guys are pretty much screwed. Can't get into the wilderness which is where the best elk hunting is. The areas you can get into are not the prime elk areas but there is opportunity to hunt so the way I read it, there won't be the opportunity to return permits there.

To the OP: turn it in, my friend.

Tucannon archery tag holders: send me a PM. I'd lend a friendly suggestion.

I'd go for this. New hunters may never have the chance at great tag in Oregon with their system. Bad for the long term future of hunting.

I'm a guy who has 9 points in most categories right now as well so I have been putting in for a while so I'm not saying this because I'm a new guy to the system. I wouldn't mind if they changed it over on me I think it's the right way to do things. I also agree bad for long term. Guys can't get quite as excited when they start out knowing how slim their chances are of drawing a decent tag are with our current money grabbing system. Part of me is ashamed I play into it but that would be a lot of years wasted if I stopped now.

With our system, people applying for the first time DO have a chance to draw. Other states with a preference point system where the tags only go to those with the most points, that's not the case. There's no perfect system, that's for sure. But ours is probably one of the better ones, other than the extra categories they added which are unnecessary and only complicate things further. I too would prefer no points. But the problem is, once you start a point system, you really can't stop.

I'll be turning my west wenaha permit in. With max points, I'm not gambling on something I have no control over. At last check, the road is closed at the snow park across from bluewood.
I see them opening the 64 further, but I don't see the wilderness opening and you certainly aren't taking a left on the 46 toward godman.

Eric, with 8 pts. I'd honestly gamble

I also have an E Wenaha tag, am i reading my map wrong?  People say 70% of the unit is burned, but comparing the burned area to my map it looks as if only about 1/4 of the unit is burned. What am I missing?

I don't get why wdfw is making the lucky/unlucky tag holders bet if the wilderness will open or stay closed. I think everyone should assume it's going to open up and if it doesn't then get their points reinstated. I would love a Tucannon tag! Lots of good area to hunt outside the wilderness.

But can you get to those areas??

Yes assuming the roads open back up.

Id turn it in. Even if they do open it up alot of the elk will have already scattered and moved out of the unit. I could also imagine quite a few elk have gotten killed in the fire.  I would rather wait a few years to hopefully draw again when the fire pressure wasn't on the animals than lose my points.

With 8 points I would roll the dice! That same weather system that's bringing snow to the cascades this week is gonna hit the blues too! It's gonna get real cold up there in Acouple days!

I dont know what weather forcast your looking at but as far out as accuweather goes there is at most .05in of rain. So basically just a sprinkle. Lows in the High 40's. I dont see snow, let alone enough rain to make a huge improvement fire wise.

I'm leaning towards it Tony, but if I had your points it would be a no brainer!  But if I keep my permit and I they end up opening it you're more than welcome to come hunt with me!

thats what I looked at, if it's rain and 45 in pomeroy it's snow up top but who knows, it probably won't but never know in the mountains..

It could take you 10-15 more years to redraw. I will have 21 points in next years draw. No way would I take a chance of losing 21 points over a fire. But 8 points...I'm all in. They always try and under promise and exceed expectations to the public. These fires will die out soon and all will be fine.
